Given Dorian's tastes for the peculiar, I imagine he'll only want Brona a thousand times more after he finds out what she is.

i usually really hate these sudden let-me-tell-you-a-story-of-the-past episodes :3
i did enjoy this one tho
the lack of interest in this thread is disturbing
AM I THE ONLY ONE LEFT WATCHING THIS SHOW??
FINE!!

week 2:
what was once a lifely thread is now a desolated desert.
everybody has left without any sign.
the only words i hear are from myself as they echo back to me.
everyday the signs of human activity fades a bit as i fade away with them.
the lonelines and isolation is slowly eating my mind away.
i have put up signs and sigals in hope that there is human life somewhere.
hoping someone will return me to take me out of this solitary excistence.
luckely i still get a meal every week that keeps me on my feet as i wander through this thread alone..
Not to worry, Shaibana. Sam and I have returned to the desolate wasteland in which you reside to bring insightful Penny Dreadful commentary.
I really liked the parallels between Caliban's fake story to Lily and then having that event actually happen with Dorian and Angelique.
The "hound of god" translation must be in relation to Ethan's role as protector of Vanessa.
I wonder what Sembene's secret is?
I was so happy to see the connection between Lily and Victor blossom. Love, pure and true. Hopefully it doesn't backfire.

I am—yet what I am none cares or knows;
My friends forsake me like a memory lost:
I am the self-consumer of my woes—
They rise and vanish in oblivious host,
Like shadows in love’s frenzied stifled throes
And yet I am, and live—like vapours tossed
Into the nothingness of scorn and noise,
Into the living sea of waking dreams,
Where there is neither sense of life or joys,
But the vast shipwreck of my life’s esteems;
Even the dearest that I loved the best
Are strange—nay, rather, stranger than the rest.
I long for scenes where man hath never trod
A place where woman never smiled or wept
There to abide with my Creator, God,
And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept,
Untroubling and untroubled where I lie
The grass below—above the vaulted sky.
I'm not sure you can call it "love, pure and true" when he pretty much raped her. He's been lying to her about who and what she is. She can't really consent about what she's doing, because he's not being honest about...well, anything. It's creepy, is what it is!
Also, I totally missed that the story that John Clare told Lily actually happened with Dorian and Angelique. Good job connecting the two!
I wouldn't consider that rape. He didn't coerce her into anything, and in fact tried to fight his urges. Her love for him is true, and she initiated the sex that they both willingly participated in.
He lied to her about who she is, but he wasn't like "you're my wife". He tries to steer her towards Caliban. I imagine he's trying to reconcile his feelings for her with his desire not to be killed by his first creation.
Hmm, I wonder how she'd feel and WILL feel when it comes to light he's been lying about and to her the entire time.
It's rape because he has a inordinate amount of power over her. Since she was "born" he's been trying to mold her into what he considers the perfect woman. She CAN'T actually love him because there's no honesty between them.
In any case, most people who watched the show feel it was rape. Especially given the way they used them both being fully clothed as a symbolic sign of shame (as opposed to Dorian and Angelique). If not shame, there's stuff that's being hidden and guarded.
In the end, even if you don't consider it RAPE, you have to admit that the lines of consent are completely blurred and it's creepy as smurf.
Well then that's where our train of thought parts ways, but I'm sure we're both excited (yet slightly scared) of seeing what's coming up in equal measure
I mean, just consider this scenario:
You find a woman who has amnesia and you tell her that you're best friends and start to take care of her. In the process she develops feelings for you and wants to engage in a relationship and sexual intimacy with you. Do you have any qualms? Do you think having sex with her is okay? Do you REALLY think you're not taking advantage of a situation where you're lying and manipulating someone in such a way where they can't give informed consent?
If you think that's okay, that's actually really smurfing weird and gross, LWL. And that's pretty much what's going on in the show. Again: even if you don't consider it rape, it's just not okay at all. Plus, Lily has shown to be almost childlike in her manners and thinking, so she's naive and simple as well. It's just all sorts of ooky.
I don't watch much of this show but regardless of his lying it seems that she consented to sex and as you said Jinx, had a "willingness to" so it's not rape. Of course it doesn't make it right, but he didn't Cosby that situation. She was conscious and apparently developed feelings for him that unfortunately arose out of a lie but could have perhaps arose either way.
If everyone who lied was a rapist we would all be rapists and that's obviously not the case so let's not go flinging about judgements if someone doesn't agree with you on whether this constitutes as rape or not.
thank god, there is once again life here!
jaj!
perhaps its a good thing that i use subs otherwise i wouldnt be able to follow it with all those fancy words.
so.. 5 minutes of sex scenes, that was pretty awkward.
on the Frankenstein case: i dont see it as rape. the situation is not ideal but its not that she is doing it against her will.
i am really curious on how this will develope. the Lily/victor/jon(/and perhaps in the future Ethan) thing.
and will they found out about Ethans secret? :O
