Never got far enough into the game where chocobos were an option. You can bet your ass I'd use them whenever I could. Stupid world map.
A chocobo ride is a welcome thing when you have to cross Palamecia desert...those Antlions will eat you alive.
Chocobos are pretty smurfing risky to use in this game. You can basically walk the whole world on foot, the only roadblock for the most part are stronger monsters. So, if you got off at the wrong spot, you could get really hurt.
