I enjoy a lot of the plots involving summoners so I'm fine with it staying.

I do not actually like summoner job classes very much BUT I love summons themselves. Heck, if there was a Final Fantasy game where the characters are some of the classic summons and you play as them (pls make this Square) I would buy the heck out of that game and play it all of the time.

Also, some of my favorite characters are summoners, Yuna and Garnet. But yes, when it comes to games like Tactics, I am really not a fan of the summoner roles. I mean I don't hate them but there's a long list of preferred jobs.

Maybe summoning would transform you into the summon (gender would be character-dependent and the default weapon would remain as the primary means of attack), elemental or debuff-based attacks and spells becoming part of your repertoire and you would also attain specialized defenses. Going again with Shiva as an example and suggesting your character normally wields a sword, you sword-attack would be ice-based, you would have access to ice magic and a certain level of immunity to ice magic (and frozen status if it appears in the game). If the summon was Carbuncle, you would have access to buff spells and your attacks would deal random buffs like barrier and haste while, if Malboro (I know, it's never been a summon but I've often thought it should), attacks would deal poison, and you would have access Bad Breath.
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.

I never really bothered much with summons. They were alright in VII and VIII because they were just strong magic for the most part. Other than that... barely touch 'em. And even with VII and VIII after a while they become fairly pointless.

Summoners are useful in that they allow for mythological references, I guess. Which... is probably not that essential to most players. It's something I've always appreciated, though.

As far as their role plot-wise, I could take them or leave them. As long as it doesn't feel shoehorned. I would like to see them change it up a bit, though. Maybe play with our expectations a bit.

I think that in job-based games, summoners cop a raw deal, but it has been elevated a few times, yeah. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the class, but the summons themselves I do not have a problem with. They can be important plot elements; it's always nice to have a little bit of mystery.

They see me rolling. They hating, patrolling.
Trying to catch me riding dirty.
