Lots of people still play this game, including me. There are still 600-2000 people online across 17 servers at any time. It even gets decent new content every single month! It has always been a decent game, but recently it has taken a new direction which has been very well received by the community - which, trust me - are a tough crowd to please!

It most definitely is worth buying if immersing yourself in a massive online fantasy world interests you. The ultimate collection is very cheap and comes with a 30 day free trial. The only problem that a lot of new players find with FFXI is that it lacks in-game guidance compared with that of modern MMOs.
