The original launch of FINAL FANTASY XIV was nothing short of disastrous for SQUARE ENIX. Damaging the brand, and players faith in the company - it ultimatey lead to the departure of it's director, Hiromichi Tanaka.
A lot of other companies may have pulled the plug, or attempted to salvage a free-to-play model from the ashes. Bravely, and boldly, SQUARE ENIX instead committed to completely overhauling the game from the ground up with new producer Naoki Yoshida in charge.
It seems that fortune does indeed favour the bold, as over 2 million players have now ventured into the realm of Eorzea since FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn was released last August. The recently released PlayStation 4 version has likely helped reach this milestone.
It's worth bearing in mind, though, that this figure represents the total number of registered game licenses. It isn't a reflection of how many accounts currently have active subscriptions. However, the success of A Realm Reborn has lead to a return to profit for the company as a whole. So, things are looking good for now!
