Thread: This word...

    Default This word...

I can't think of it. I though the word was troglodyte but that apparently means cave-dweller. The word I'm looking for implies that a person "has their hands in many pots" or rather they delve into many projects, take interest in many subjects, and discuss many topics but never really focus or excel in any one thing. This term is considered an insult by those with practical careers.

It would certainly help if I could remember where I picked it up. I could swear I heard it said once on Simpsons to describe Lisa, but I may be wrong. Anyone? Anyone?
    Jack: How do you know?

Will: It's more of a feeling really.

Jack: Well, that's not scientific. Feeling isn't knowing. Feeling is believing. If you believe it, you can't know because there's no knowing what you believe. Then again, no one should believe what they know either. Once you know anything that anything becomes unbelievable if only by virtue of the fact you now... know it. You know?

    Will: No.

If Demolition Man were remade today

Huxley: What's wrong? You broke contact.
Spartan: Contact? I didn't even touch you.
Huxley: Don't you want to make love?
Spartan: Is that what you call this? Why don't we just do it the old-fashioned way?
    Huxley: NO!
    Spartan: Whoa! Okay, calm down.
Huxley: Don't tell me to calm down!
Spartan: What's gotten into you? 'Cause it sure as hell wasn't me.
Huxley: Physical relations in the way of intercourse are no longer acceptable John Spartan.
Spartan: What? Why the hell not?
Huxley: It's the law, John. And for your information, the very idea that you suggested it makes me feel personally violated.
Spartan: Wait a minute... violated? Huxley what the hell are you accusing me of here?
Huxley: You need to leave, John.
    Spartan: But Huxley.
    Huxley: Get out!
Moments later Spartan is arrested for "violating" Huxley.

By the way, that's called satire. Get over it.

Are you sure you didnt see the person not focusing on one task at a time and then someone else called them a troglodyte (which is a legitimate insult) and then you associated that word with that meaning even though they were insulting them for being antisocial shutins?

I can only remember Lisa being called a PC thug.

Dilettante? Sciolist? You might be thinking of neophyte, since that's a word that's often misused as an insult.

Diletante. I'm pretty sure that's it. My definition was pretty badly off.

Thank you. That was gonna make me crazy.

I would say neophyte as an insult is not misused. It's like the insult query "what are you new?"

Actually, I don't know if fingering pots is acceptable anywhere. Except maybe Australia.

Everything is acceptable in Australia. They have giant water spiders, after all. This guy fingers eight pots at a time.
