What was your FIRST vehicle?

The first car I "drove" was a 70's era on the tree pickup while I sat in my dad's lap. After that it was a Mercury Capri. I was three or four. It looked almost exactly like this except it wasn't a RS model The first car I actually learned to drive was a 1985 Ford Bronco II stick. Here is an example. Also in repose in the car graveyard, but may yet be resurrected with a rebuilt transmission. My first car that was for me was a 2000 Chevy Cavalier that had no power options, no airbags and no tape deck. I called her Mississippi Barebones and I loved her. My sister killed her. I have no pictures of my own and that makes me sad. Here is what she looked like: Now I drive Ruby the Suby. We put a transmission in her last year and I think the one we got is ready to go out. sharky should expect more wailing from me about my car in the next 2-5 months.

My fist car was a maroon 1990 Mazda MX6.

I loved it. Five speed manual transmission. I learned to drive in this car.

Alas, my father has only ever failed me in his teaching but once. And it was in the matter of vehicular maintenance. I was left unaware of the fact that vehicles required a certain amount of oil to operate properly. So, after six months of driving my wondrous pussy mobile, it promptly stopped running as I pulled into the gas station. I blew a head gasket and the engine had zero amount of oil in it. And so my first vehicular journey came to an end, shortly after I had treated my mother to a meal at the spectacular restaurant that is Panda Express.

My next vehicle was a 1990 Dodge Shadow.

I had it through my senior year in high school and then I went to boot camp. Replaced the battery on my return three months later. Caught fire and burned up in my recruiting station.

And then I got slightly smarter and got slightly less killer cars.

The first vehicle I drove was my mum's - it's a champagne Mazda Tribute. I'm not 100% sure of the year - maybe ~2003?

The first vehicle I owned is the same one I own now - a 2004 champagne Holden Commodore. It used to be my dad's.

My parents apparently have an alcohol problem with all this champagne going around.

I learned to drive on my dad's Ford Explorer, which looked like this, except white. The only upshot to that was that I could parallel park pretty much anything that came after.

My first car that was mine was a 1995 Lexus ES300 (this, but this color) which had about 110,000 miles on it at the time, and that I still had for 9 years after. I loved it, though it made getting a second car a definite step down.

Learned to drive in my mom's '03 Toyota Camry and my dad's 2000 Chevy Silverado. My first car is a 2010 Honda Civic that I got used. His name is Skull Kid and have a Majora's Mask decal on the rear window. But it's dark and he's dirty so no pictures without a generic google-fu.

1986 Pontiac Grand Prix LE. Some idiot before me tried to put an 8 cylinder engine in it. When it ran properly, I probably broke the sound barrier, but most of the time--you'll never guess what--it had engine problems. I didn't drive the car around much. Luckily, I acquired it for a very cheap price, so I was not bothered. Also, when I eventually sold it (someone offered me to buy it out of nowhere and I warned them of the problems, but they did not care), I made almost all of my money back. The way my schedule worked out back then, I could borrow my mom's 1994 Ford Taurus, so it felt like I was driving cat piss instead of diarrhea, which was nice.

I ended up getting another risky buy, but low cost car later down the line. This time is was an 1987 Toyota Camry. It had over 200,000 miles on it. Amazingly, it didn't have much problems and when it did, the situation was always cheap, easily fixed, and smooth.

From then on I bought a more reliable car. As any gear head reading this by now knows, I could care less about style. I just am happy to have something that works and it modern. I still got snarky replies last time for my choice in cars, so please don't try to impress me with your Fast and the Furious-like preferences or whatever. I honestly don't give a s***.

So anyway, I was impressed with my luck with Toyota so when I finally was in the position to buy something newer, I went with a 1999 Toyota Corolla. Not so lucky this time. I had to get the engine replaced (family knew a guy that did it for cheap and it was the better option than buying a junker again since I could not afford a decent car had I tried to get a new one at that time). That was because it leaked oil, which I didn't know at the time. It did it during a long trip and seized suddenly. There literally was no warning and the many gear heads I know didn't chastise me for it since the leak was so sudden. Trust me, if it was my fault, they would have gave me hell.

Anyway, after the "new" engine was installed, it had no real problems after that, but in that car's final couple of years, the engine had the same problem (though not nearly as severe). I later learned that the issue was a common occurrence in that particular brand of Toyota. So yeah, I was done with Toyota.

So last year I bought a 2012 Dodge Avenger, and I am happy with it. No BS so far, and now I have the money and position to take good care of it.

I'm sorry you had problems with your Toyota. I've heard they're pretty reliable cars and I would like to own one some day. It's basically my go to brand. But yeah, they have problems like all cars do.

More seriously though. I did a lot of practice driving in some old Jeep with horrible steering, and also an automatic Subaru Forester that's probably not more than 10 years old. I did my driving education in a pretty new VW Polo and an also pretty new BMW hatchback. I don't remember more specific model names for any of these cars. I don't really care a lot about cars in general.

Well, last time I stated what you basically said (being happy with what I drive) when there was a thread about cars, someone (can't remember the user so the person isn't active right now) basically jumped down my throat and tried to make me feel like s*** because I don't care about cars in the same style he does.

There have been a couple of other people, mainly family, in my life that give me grief because I don't drive what Vin Diesel drove in Fast and The Furious 12: Tokyo Drift 3: Deathrace 3000. I also know a lot of chill gear heads (one of my best friends being one of them), but it is in my experience that much like all interests being discussed on the internet, saying what I have to say about cars brings out the worst in car culture people and how they have to show off by talking down to me, much like how there are always morons who think they're the s*** when they "win" a "race" against a Ford Windstar in their Charger.

Well so far no one has made fun of anyone's car. Hopefully they leave you alone this time. Sorry the Toyota took a dump. They're usually quite tough. If it makes you feel better, the Avenger supposed to be reliable. The only grumblings I've heard about it consistently are issues with the HVAC system. (Air Conditioning/Heating) It's in a very competitive class, but it got good reviews.
