    Default Garland's Motivation

Since the game never really elaborates on this point, why do you think Garland kidnapped Princess Sarah besides plot convenience? Was he in-love with her in a one-sides relationship? Was it revenge for not getting the recognition he felt he deserved? Was he using it as a ploy to take over the kingdom?

    What are your thoughts?

I used to think he was a jilted lover. There's a scholar in the Castle that mentions Garland being a good knight until "..." They never elaborate beyond that.

Afterwards, I think he kidnapped her in search of the lute.

I like to think the 'until' was until he sobered up.

Turns out Sober Garland is just a dick.

I don't even think it was plot convenient.

I started up a new game last night and the King says [ PSP ver ] that the King and Garland used to be good friends, until he stole away his daughter Sarah.

Guessing that he was that second-in-command guy, that wanted more power and more control.

So he was a good guy until he did something bad. My, what a complex character.

    FF1, what a complex game.

I generally assumed he kidnapped the princess for a ransom of some kind, though exactly what he demanded is never explored or explained; I like to think he wanted the king to build that bridge so people could finally leave the damn kingdom. >: |

It would also explain how said bridge was built/finished so quickly when you return the princess -- the king totally cheats you out of a legitimate reward.

He being in love w/ her or wanting more power/ransom doesn't seem to fit in w/ his role as (SPOILER)being Chaos.

I don't believe he is Chaos at the start, but rather is destined to become Chaos due to the fiends pulling him back after his defeat. If he just needed to die in order to fulfill his role and be pulled back, he probably would just off himself without giving the Light Warriors free experience, the Lute, the king's respect, and the bridge they need to begin their adventure.

    >>> Chaos/4 Fiends played tricks with his mind and made him evil, otherwise why he would shut himself at the temple of fiends?..
