    :monster:

Purposefully not listing any metal because it isn't for everyone. I could easily list at least another 20 metal artists. Also listing eleven because smurf you I couldn't narrow it down to ten.

    Godspeed You! Black Emperor
    Genesis (Peter Gabriel era)
    Magma
    Frank Zappa
    The Mars Volta
    King Crimson
    Yes
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
    Swans
    Shiina Ringo
    Joanna Newsom

Saxon (Like Metallica? Saxon are on of the bands that directly influenced them and their music)
Primordial (A blend of Irish Folk, Black Metal and some Progressive and Doom influence)
Wintersun (its very difficult to describe these, especially after their last album which I honestly rate very highly)
Blind Guardian (Incredible band which has a lot of melodic and symphonic elements to their music, oh and their early stuff is drool worthy riff-laden speed metal <3 cannot go wrong with that)
Ayreon (A sort of collaboration project featuring some of the top musicians in rock and metal with the figurehead of the project writing a sort of story, a concept that intertwines each album. Oh and its prog, which is gooooood)
Dread Sovereign (A side project featuring two members of Primordial, its an occult themed Doom Metal band with some heavy riffs and melodies)
Gamma Ray ((A favourite band of mine, a break away from German legends Helloween, melody and speed beautifully intertwined and some tributes to classics of the genre here and there as easter eggs in their songs, you know bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest? yeah))
Gloryhammer ((Ever heard of Alestorm? Well this is a side project with one of their guys, its some of the cheesiest and most ridiculous but still amazing, stuff ever, their album is a concept album that is about an army of Unicorns turned evil and undead by an evil wizard laying siege to the Scottish city of Dundee and a hero arising from the ashes and ruins to slay him, no really, that's the story <3 amazing ))
Mael Mordha ((Another Irish Folk Metal band but a bit different to Primordial, highly recommended))
Bathory ((This band is a strange one from one of the first Black Metal bands to the founders of a more melodic and simplistic genre, Viking Metal, amazing writing and lyrics that will make even the Vikingest of Vikings weep and grow another beard in the process))

Well, I'll take a cue from The Man and not post any metal, in which case I may not make it quite to ten:

    Fleet Foxes
    José González
    Dropkick Murphys
    Mogwai
    Madeski Scofield Martin & Wood
    Queens of the Stone Age

Okay, I said I wouldn't post any metal, but I must.

    Funmetal:
    Kvelertak

    Technicalmetalthatkindofisn'tmetalbutisbrilliantnonetheless:
    Animals As Leaders

    SlowSoftSludgeTripmetal:
    Kylesa

    BESTmetal:
Brilliant video, incredible song, conscientious metal, genius band. (bonus epic metaldog ftw)
    Gojira

    Bonusmetal:
    Monuments

I am going to post metal, but nothing excessively heavy going. Can't see a lot of people appreciating the likes of Livelover.

Anathema (post-rock, avoid the first two albums as they switch genres afterwards)
    Dream Theater (progressive metal)
    Harmaja (folk rock)
    King Diamond (heavy metal)
    Alcest (shoegaze/'blackgaze')
    Empyrium (folk/doom/'neofolk')
Ghost (heavy metal, also known as Ghost B.C)
    Green Carnation (acoustic/progressive rock)
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart (indie pop)
Random & Lost Perception (hip hop)
    Evergrey (progressive metal)

Matisyahu - Recently got in to him actually even though he's been around for a while
The Roots - can't go wrong with The Roots, but why do so few people actually listen to them
Dan Mangan - Very nice voice on this dude
Jamie Lidell - Same as above, but his is funkier
Phantogram - purchased all of their albums (they have 3) and I think every song is good which is extremely rare
Empire of the Sun - They're like Abba basically but the modern version
    Caravan Palace
    Curtis Mayfield
    Earth, Wind, & Fire
    Mad Capsule Markets

Not all of them are my favorites, but I think more people should listen to them.

Garth Brooks. (I say this as a person who grew up surrounded by Country and hated most of it, but Garth's songs were always good)
    Johnny Cash
    Sharon den Adel
    Amy Lee
    Nightwish
    Red
    Breaking Benjamin
Miracle of Sound (the guy makes awesome songs about games)
    Egypt Central
    Taylor Momsen

OMFG let's be best friends. I mean, I like a lot more metal than this list would suggest, but I like everything you listed and LOVE half of it.

I love love love Ayreon. Blind Guardian is great too. Always thought Primordial was a little overhyped. Wintersun's last album was fine, but disappointing considering how much time (lol) and energy supposedly went into it.

Ok, since there are clearly a lot of metal fans in this thread, let me relay my expertise in the genre...and attempt to narrow it down to 10.

    1. Kayo Dot, the avant-jazz-prog-metal ensemble who have released the two greatest albums ever written, 2003's "Choirs of the Eye" and 2013's "Hubardo".
    2. A Forest of Stars, psychedelic bizarro Victorian-themed black metal, that's incredibly catchy despite all those weird qualifiers.
    3. Novembre, Italian melodic doom/death metal oft compared to Opeth, but with less technicality in favor of more romantic, layered richness.
    4. Rosetta, post-metal that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the titans of the genre (Neurosis, Isis, and Cult of Luna). So good I named my daughter after them.
    5. Patrons of the Rotting Gate, a solo project from Ireland/UK who is making some seriously awesome dissonant/melodic/progressive black metal. Can't wait for his planned second and third albums.
    6. Extol, the first band that really got me into extreme metal, now back and as good as ever with their latest release. Highly technical melodic prog-death-thrash.
    7. Persefone, brilliant and technical concept band from the tiny country of Andorra but a sound as big as all of Europe. Every bit as proggy as Dream Theater, but with an eye toward melodic death. Loads of technical riffs on guitar and synth, tons of melody, great concepts.
    8. Haken, comparable to Dream Theater back when they were good (circa "Scenes from a Memory"). Two great concept albums and then an even better non-story album, these guys blew me away when I first heard them last year.
    9. The Tea Club, young dudes from Philly who are legitimately carrying the torch of 70s prog a la Yes, King Crimson, gabriel-era Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. No other band playing today sounds like this. Currently working on their fourth release.
    10. Ozric Tentacles, a group that's been around since 1983 that I just discovered last week. Psychedelic electro-prog-jazz-fusion that is just the best to relax and/or jam out to. Totally addicted to them right now.

And again, seeing the prevalence of metal fans, another shameless plug for my own solo project, Potmos Hetoimos: progressive doom/sludge (though veering away from doom and toward a wide variety of new things with the next release, coming later this year).

Hey, metalgloria please don't triple post. Instead, please use the nifty multi-quote feature we have to easily add to your post.

Sigur Ros is pretty great, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't only really like two of their songs. The singer's voice takes a bit to get use to.

    I second all of these.

As for ten of my own, off the top of my head...

    John Frusciante
    Adam Green
    Justice
    Beck
    The Black Keys
    Frank Turner
    The Tallest Man On Earth
    Sublime
    Talking Heads
    Weezer

Quadruple, actually. Sorry though. Thanks for cleaning it up for me.
