Genre first. If it's FPS, it can smurf right off. Other than that, if word is that it's pretty good, I'm generally sold. I guess I buy into hype pretty easily.

If it's a sequel to a series I already have, I'll look a bit more into gameplay tweaks and see where the story's going.
