Which version did you play?

The first version I played was the SNES Fan Translation on an emulator. It . . . also occurs to me that may be the only version I've played. :/

PSX & GBA, I later played an SNES fan translation that was horrible. Whoever made it tried to be funny, but totally failed.

Just out of interest, which version is the best one? I'm working my way through VI, and I will eventually get to other games in the classic era

Probably the GBA version since it has a bonus dungeon and doesn't have the loading times. The translation is also generally considered to be the best.

Yeah, Faris doesn't have her fakey Pirate talk. Plus, you can do the quicksave trick to get past the Jackanapes early in the game.
