So who is... Culex?

Do you guys remember Culex from Super Mario RPG? He was an rather difficult optional boss who summoned elemental crystal guardians and whose battle theme was the FF4 boss theme. Once you beat him, the FF victory fanfare played (the only time you hear it in this game!) and Culex said something cryptic about having possibly met you in another game before.

Do you think Culex was a specific monster or person, reincarnated? Or just a tribute and Easter Egg that Square put in for fun?

I'm pretty sure he was just a tribute to the Final Fantasy series and not a reference to any one particular creature.

I always viewed it as just a general acknowledgement of the FF series. He's not supposed to represent anyone, but he is designed to appear like a FF villain.

I still think this is one of the coolest things in SMRPG. I was all giddy when I first fought Cluex because of the FFIV boss battle theme, which is one of my favorite battle music in the whole series. FFIV being my favorite game helped, as well.
