Depends entirely on the personal preferences of the player. If they don't mind dated graphics, grinding, or going backwards in story telling, I would honestly just suggest they play all the older games in order from I to VI. Otherwise it'd be tailor to their preferences.

thanks so much for your response, torij! the suggestion is for me. unfortunately, I didn't play any of the titles in the series until 7-10. I played the super Nintendo one, but all that I cared about doing at the time was flying the airship!

graphics don't bother me, necessarily. I've recently modified my Wii to play all of the older Final Fantasy titles. I just don't know where to start with them! your suggestion rocks! thanks again for your input!

I thought so, but wasn't sure. Figured you were still playing VI and about to try V. Each title is a different story with its own cast of characters so it doesn't really matter which order you play them in unless we're dealing with direct sequels, but I think it'd be cool to go through them all starting from I. See how the franchise progressed through the years.

Yeah going in order is my suggestion as well, especially if you are playing the original versions of the games then you can really see the amount of depth each new installment brought to the series.
