Castlevania is not scary, frustratingly fun as hell but hardly scary or even creepy. It's hard to be frightened when you got the awesome first level theme bringing you into the castle.
It's not trout your pants horror, but it's horror like in the same sense of The Bride of Frankenstein or any of those schlocky 50s horror films. Not scary, but they use the same motifs of actual horror.
