The Rescuers (1977)
Matt ranked it at 24. Shauna ranked it at 1.
OVERALL SCORE: 12.5
Matt: So in terms of my personal Disney List, this is the lowest down of all of the entries you will see on the top 10 ranking at #24/100. It made the cut because someone put it at number one. However it's still a good movie regardless of Shauna's enduring nostalgia for the flick.
I don't have much to say about this movie except that it's a good little adventure romp that features two little mice, an orphan girl and Disney's Most Diabolical villain. Turn into a Genie to rule the universe? Na. Kill your brother to usurp the throne? Don't wanna hear it. Tell an orphan girl that no one will ever love her? Now you've crossed the line! I mean look at this witch
The Rescuers is just a wee charming movie in that period where Disney was kind of rubbish.
Shauna: Admittedly, the reason this even made it on to any sort of Top 10 list is because of my nostalgia and the permanent childhood affection I hold for this movie. Yes, the original is my personal favourite Disney movie, not the supposedly superior sequel (which, just for the record, I also thoroughly enjoyed). This was that one movie for me – the one that when it was your turn to pick what movie to watch, you always picked it no matter what. I watched the video so much that I wore it out, and then cried until my Dad did some DIY on it at the expense of another VHS.
Unlike Monsters, Inc., I’m not sure that I would ever be concerned that I’d wake up one day and find that I suddenly don’t connect with The Rescuers. Nothing will ever make me stop loving those little mice and their adventures in being the littlest heroes.
Honestly, I’ve been sitting here a while trying to properly articulate why I love this movie as much as I do, and I am really struggling. When writing things like this, you try to justify why you enjoy something and that’s often a difficult thing to do. But in this situation? I will admit that many other Disney movies do what this one does, and often do it so much better, yet I will put this on top every time.
I just love this movie for being what it is.
I love the characters, Bernard and Bianca are wonderful together as partners. I love Rufus the cat. I love Orville, that stupid albatross. Heck, even Penny is pretty alright in my books. Special mention goes to Evinrude the dragonfly, who I have always considered to be the most adorable guy with his little turtleneck. The villains are something special here too – Madame Medusa has pet alligators! What is up with that? She is quite possibly the most evil villain out there too – who tells a poor little orphan girl that she is too ugly for anyone to ever love and adopt her, and then puts that her in a death trap after stealing her Teddy? Madame Medusa, that’s who. Also Mr Snoops, I guess. Forget murdering people, hurting a kid’s feelings is way worse. I love the little Rescue Aid Society song they sing. I love the little mouse community the mice have all built – Bernard using the comb as ladders has always blown me away. I love the entire ridiculous climactic ending in the swamp, with all the little critters helping out and drinking their moonshine, and Madame Medusa water-skiing on her alligators…
I could probably go on, so I’ll stop here. It is definitely not the prettiest film, nor is it the greatest on any technical level by any stretch of the imagination. But damn, I just can’t get enough of it.
How many offensive stereotypes can you count?!
I'm pretty sure you're right, Matt.
EDIT: Also, that mouse on the video thumbnail is clearly checking out her butt, and she doesn't seem to be objecting...
Bow before the mighty Javoo!
It's alright for me to be in the minority. x}
Im still slightly disapointed the little girl scenes werent time skipped and it turned out she was never rescued and grew up to be medusa all along since I didnt recall seeing the little girl and medusa in the same frame until halfway through the movie.
Out of curiosity did you watch everything in release order or did you watch sequels imediately after watching the originals or in alphabetical order, or in whatever order you felt like at the time.

Release order of the originals, with the sequels being watched following the original.
