How should I fight Lavos?

So, I've finally gotten to the end game in Chrono Trigger. How should I tackle Lavos? I know that there are two endings available to first playthroughs, but I can't remember which action gives me which.
Should I go through the Black Omen? Or fly the Epoch into Lavos (alternatively, should I use the trash can?)

Go through the Black Omen to get some ballin' gear, beef up a bit, and be sure to charm a Prism Helm and Prism Dress from the final boss of the dungeon's hands.

Black Omen in 1000 AD -> Beat Lavos 1st form -> Portal Out
Black Omen in 600 AD -> Portal Out
Black Omen in 12,000 BC -> Finish Him

If you clear the Black Omen in the later time periods it is still there in the earlier ones. (Just most of the bosses are already dead.) But you can fight Queen Zeal three times and have Ayla steal stuff every time.

As for endings, I dunno. Save just before the fight and watch all three.

I go through the Black Omen always just because I really feel I have to put a cap on that whole Zeal situation.

Through the safety of New Game Plus

Black Omen seems to be the way to go. I think that's where I finished it. I tried going to a few different places just to see how they were different. I wanted to go to 1999 just to see what it looked like.
