I beat it in 4.5 hours. These "match the crystals" games are usually mind-numbing, but the timer on this game made it pretty intense at times.

I haven't quite beat it yet myself because I've been playing other Steam games (of course) but I'm definitely giving it some time here and there. And yeah, the timer was a definite twist of the usual game style.

    Note: Probably spoilers.

So as Mister Adequate told me as I loaded up this game, "Basically someone turned a Stephen King novel into a video game." And you know, I can see where he's coming from with that pretty much immediately, as the first five minutes of the game involved being chased by some creepy homeless guy who wants to chop me into little pieces. Once you get to relative safety, things don't let up, as you can probably tell by this screenshot:

    alan2.jpg

Oh boy! I can't wait to die, die, die, die, die!

Fortunately the voice of god arrives and gives me a flashlight and a gun.

    alan3.jpg

To kill creepy ghost zombie things you have to use both. Flashlights, as it turns out, are pretty deadly.

    alan4.jpg

OH HEY JUST KIDDING IT WAS ALL JUST A DREAM! You're actually on a rinky dink ferry boat in rinky dink Washington (at least I would assume, judging by the license plates and scenery)

    alan5.jpg

"Honey, I think you should stop playing those scary zombie games before bed every night."

    alan6.jpg

Oh cool, I'm a famous writer. Gee, that must feel nice.

My wife has some errands for me to run. Scary places abound, even if you just want to use the bathroom.

    alan7.jpg

"Aww man, I just gotta take a dump."

Later we head to some cabin we rented, which it turns out is (*gasp*), also incredibly dark and spooky.

    alan8.jpg

My wife and I promptly get in a big fight. I'm going to presume it's because she promised me a "big surprise upstairs" and then, after showing herself off in nothing but her underwear, she told me that she is not actually the surprise and that she got me a typewriter. Since I am a man and I was actually hoping for some action, I storm off into the super eerie and not at all pleasant woods, which is clearly a great idea.

The joke is on me, because the next thing I know... ... ...? ....??.... .. ...I don't know but it involves my wife screaming and me suddenly being somewhere else entirely, and my car falling off a cliff.

I spent the next hour or so wandering around the forest, shooting people with my flashlight, and running into an unusually high number of old abandoned logging camps.

    alan9.jpg

Seriously, I found like three all within about half a mile of each other.

The goal at this point is to get to a rickety and not at all shady gas station in the distance, and frankly I would have kept playing until I got there except that I'm not feeling great right now and I kind of think the game was starting to give me motion sickness or something, compounding my current head cold.

I leave you with PRODUCT PLACEMENT!!

    alan10.jpg

(Next up I'll have to fight spooky ghost Energizer Bunny).

    THE VERDICT:

    • Spooky scary skeletons
    • not 100% sure what is going on, story-wise
    • movement feels kind of floaty, I liked it better with a controller though
    • Actually pretty fun when you start playing
    • You'll want to keep going to see what happens next
    • Great for horror fans or people who like spooky atmospheric games
    • Kind of gave me Walking Dead vibes
    • I like it so far
    • ~2spooky~

Okay, the cute chick here wants to send me to the club. That sounds innocent enough, right?

    alien5.jpg

I mean, we've got holo-strippers, we've got flayed corpses hanging from the walls, we've got club music, how bad can it be?

    alien6.jpg

    trout

    alien7.jpg

    smurf

    alien8.jpg

And that's it, that's basically the game.

    THE VERDICT:
    • Pretty fun
    • Shoot xenos with pulse rifles
    • Throw grenades
    • everyone dies
    • watch people get dragged through vents
    • Help people out, then watch them die
    • good times will be had by all
    • GAME OVER MAN. GAME OVER!

I really liked Alan Wake. I played it on Xbox, so maybe having the controller made it slightly less terrible?

SPOILERS: I have no idea what happened in that game at all. The story made about 0 sense, but I had fun.

There is apparently a Predator storyline as well as an Alien storyline (where you get to be the Predator/aliens). I may or may not give those a whirl depending on how I feel about it later today.

So the second you wake up in some hospital you're trying to escape. Guess I'm not terribly impressed with lying around all day. Deus Ex vibes start happening right from the start, which is always a huge plus.

    alpha2.JPG

You can heal at these little first aid kits on the wall. This amuses me greatly because upon healing your character essentially wipes out the entire contents like some sort of vicodin addict.

    alpha3.JPG

This is one of those games where you can choose how to reply. This affects other peoples' opinions of you, and apparently it can also be a helpful tactic to make people mad on purpose. At least, that's what the game tells me!

    alpha4.jpg

    AWW YEAH RPG TIME

    alpha5.JPG

Oh right, apparently you get bonuses from how you talk, too. So that's pretty nifty.

    alpha6.JPG

Oddly enough, this is the point where you finally get to do some character customization (to an extent-- this isn't TES or anything). You can, however, give yourself some FANTASTIC hats.

    alpha7.JPG

Apparently I have dual PhDs and speak a dozen languages. I am jealous of my virtual self

    alpha8.JPG

Next up it's time to do a tutorial and practice shooting people, in true Deus Ex fashion.

    alpha9.jpg

    It's pretty fun.

    alpha10.jpg

This is followed by about ten trillion years of talking to the guy in charge (for the life of me I can't figure out how to make him like me, my rep with him keeps bouncing up and down), and then the next thing I know I'm in this baller house in Saudi Arabia.

    alpha11.JPG

I'm having a lot of fun with this game so far so I have a feeling that this is to be continued...

    THE VERDICT:

    • Deus Ex Lite™
    • Pretty fun so far!
    • I'm enjoying it
    • Controls are a wee bit awkward but I'll get used to it
    • You can be a smartass if you want
    • You can also flirt with the qt Asian chick (she doesn't like it)
    • You can buy this game used on Xbox 360 for like $5 you really have no excuse here
    • If you like stealth type games check it out

One great thing about AP to note is that, no matter how you play, and no matter what you do, you'll get bonuses. Be nice and sympathetic and solve problems carefully and considerately? You get bonuses. Burst in with guns blazing? You get bonuses. Stealth through it like a Stealth Bastard? Bonuses.

So I decided to play some more Alpha Protocol today because it's fun.

    And Yet It Moves
    Platformer/Puzzle/Casual
    Steam Link

This is a puzzle game where you are made out of paper. Your goal is to get to the end of every level. You can rotate the screen around on a central axis in order to escape tricky situations (and get yourself into trickier ones).

    andyet1.jpg

This fellow tells you where to go so you go where he says.

    andyet2.JPG

...and that's it, that's the game.

    THE VERDICT:

    • I'm relatively sure I saw this mechanic in a Newgrounds game like ten years ago
    • I guess it's okay if you like puzzle games?
    • Kinda hipster
    • I think it was made by like one guy
    • I think he also did all the sound effects by himself
    • Not really bad, just kinda meh

And Yet It Moves is my least favorite game I have ever played. It really is.
