Is that hairdo really necessary for a soldier to have

Too big
Much too big, it's ridiculous that FF7 isn't about classic back trauma
He swung out from under a collapsing plate with that thing on his back!? Nuh uh
It's Aerith, not Aeris
That's stupid!
You're ugly
"Buster" sword?
Is that hairdo really necessary for a soldier to have
Go!
None of yer damn business!!
Thing's no less than 5 feet long, 1 foot wide, and 2 inches thick, for both the Buster Sword and Fusion Sword. If you're getting hit with it, you're a goner. I'm suprised during the scene at the Nibelheim reactor Sephiroth didn't get cut in half.
How come 'AWESOME' isn't an answer?

Cloud has an exceptional length.
It's bigger on the inside.
This escalated quickly
In a materia-less, mako-less, Earth gravity world where people don't basically fly and shoot nuclear blasts out of their arms, I would say that it would be quite big.
But how heavy? That is the real question.
Bow before the mighty Javoo!
The sword weights somewhere between 120-240lbs, depending on how thick you think it is. (1"-2").
And also assuming that steel has the same density in the world of FF7.

Why am I thinking that Cloud waving that thing around in public without any regard for what's in his immediate vicinity would be both wantonly destructive and hilarious?
"YOU! Yeah, you! With the giant super sword! You knocked over my entire display last week! Get the hell out of here with that thing, will you!?"
I dunno if it weighs THAT much. There are a lot of lightweight alloys out there, and whatever the heck it's made of it couldn't be too heavy because if it was 240 pounds Cloud would have a hard time even lifting it up. I say it weighs around 50 lbs, maybe 70. Maybe lighter, because it's clearly sharp enough to slice through steel and concrete like a butter knife, so it's unlike any steel alloy we have here.
Well, in any fantasy RPG they play a little fast and loose with actual physics. But based on it's volume and the density of steel that is what it comes to.
As for trying to figure out what it weights logically, I know quite a bit about actual sword mechanics and construction, as well as physics involved in martial arts. There really isn't any way to reconcile what is happening in the game with real life. It's best to just enjoy it for the ridiculous spectacle that it is.

Y-you mean... You're the ultimate blacksmith?! Holy cow!
Eh, I'll take your word for it then. But there's no way in Heaven or Earth that thing's made of steel. Maybe it's some kind of lightweight mythical ore or something of that nature but not even Damascus steel can cut through a foot of concrete like a hot knife through butter. I have no clue what it is but I sure want a sword made of that stuff!
