Default New Final Fantasy Entry: Mevius Final Fantasy Announced

The original creator of Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and the current lead producer, Yoshinori Kitase, announced in an interview with Famitsu a new original Final Fantasy entry that goes back to the series roots. That game is titled Mevius Final Fantasy.

The game is being developed in-house and is, yes, a mobile game. It's slated to be released Spring 2015 for the iOS and Android. According to Kitase, the game will take on a more classic feel like the original Final Fantasy. There will be features like map exploration - although moving across said map will be automated - tactical battles, and a leveling system. The game itself will focus on the "Warrior of Light" theme to pay respects to the roots Sakaguchi created.

More details will be released when the edition of Famitsu is. The full interview between Kitase and Sakaguchi will be available tomorrow.

What are your thoughts about completely new Final Fantasy? Any thoughts of it being on a mobile platform? If this game has Sakaguchi's blessing, do you feel it could be a favorable entry?

While automated travel is an eyebrow raiser, it is nice that the series' long time fans are being acknowledged.

Hironobu Sakaguchi? When did he start working with SE again?

He doesn't. Most of Square's notable alumni continue to work with them in a contractor capacity. Matsuno, for example, was one of the project leads on Tactics Ogre, despite his infamous falling out with the company.

This is an incredibly bizarre development. Sad to see just how far Japan has committed to mobile.

I think this may just be a consultant thing? We'll know more when the full interview comes out of course.

I have mixed feelings about this.

On one hand the world presented in the concept art looks intriguing and the goal of the game is to be incredibly classic. The game is also being worked on by Sakaguchi himself.

On the other hand, some of the gameplay is automated and the main character (if this game has main characters) looks like Shulk. Then there's the whole mobile thing.

But there are giant monster chocobos. I guess I'll just have to wait for the full scoop.

UPDATE: Toshiyuki Itahana will be the one creating the character designs. His previous work can be seen on Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.

Kazushige Nojima, known for his works in writing on the Final Fantasy VII compilation, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XV, and various other works for the series is also part of the team.

So all the games that I think have the worst writing in the series. Great.

When was the last time Sakaguchi was officially working for Square Enix (even if only on a contracted basis)? Has he done so at all since his departure? I can't recall it happening so this certainly raised my eyebrows.

Just when I was starting to get excited.

You should still be slightly excited. Nojima, Itahana, Kitase, Amano, and blessing by Sakaguchi? I dunno. Sakaguchi made a rocking Mobile game recently, I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't that bad.

Is it my imagination, or are we seeing this phrase an awful lot the past few years? Weren't 4 Heroes of Light, Dimensions, and Bravely Default (and others I'm forgetting?) all said to be a hearkening back to the old-school FF feel?

Yes, some of them specifically touting going back to the "Warrior of Light" concept.

To be fair, from what I hear most of those games did go back to the old school feel, so it's not like there is false advertising kicking in. Haven't played any myself, so I'm just going by the grapevine here, but yeah.
