Maybe they want to leave with Sabin and Cyan? It's just a cute way to make the section easier for players who didn't bring Shadow or they are too under-leveled.

The ghosts are fine. As mentioned they're there to help you fill out your team.
It's the Magi Master using you to level up so he can kick your butt later.
I like to think they are Biggs and Wedge, when I don't pretend they were simply teleported to Guardia.

They're the ghosts of Christmas past and Christmas future. As for the Christmas present, it's under the Christmas Tree.
Just for fun there was this one time I put in codes to level the ghosts to max and gave them Atma Weapons. The rest of the game I played normally.
