    Default 2015 Media Log

The idea of this thread is to post what things you are reading/playing/watching for each month of 2015. Ideally you should have one post and come back and edit it each month. Of course, you can post more if you want to comment on what other people are doing. You can also give ratings to the various media.

For this year, let's also set goals for the year as to how much we will consume. Particularly with books, I think it is a good to set a reading goal for yourself since reading enriches the mind and all that jazz.

    My Goals
Books to read: 15 (15/15) GOAL REACHED!
Games to complete: 15 (16/15) GOAL REACHED!
    Movies to watch: 15 (14/15)

    15 for '15!

At the end of the year we'll have something to look back on and see what we did and if we met our goals!

    My Ratings

    May

    Books
    • The Wise Man's Fear ** - Great in some places, terrible in others. Overall the writing was bad and the plot took strange turns but I enjoyed the world and I like Kvothe. Also this was possibly the longest book I ever read.

    • S. - in progress
    • Influence: Science and Practice - in progress

    • Mass Effect (PS3) - in progress
    • Front Mission 3 (PS1) ** - Battles sometimes got repetitive and the story was convoluted at times but I enjoyed that tactical mech action.
    • Lunar Silver Star Harmony (PSP) - in progress

    Movies
    • Mad Max: Fury Road ** - A long car chase heavy on action and explosions and light on plot, exactly as advertised.

    TV
    • Jimmy Kimmel Live *
    • America's Got Talent **
    • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine **
    • Last Week Tonight ***
    • Mythbusters **
    • Mr. Robot ***
    • American Ninja Warrior **
    • Orphan Black *** - Why didn't I watch this before? It's great.

    • The Big Bang Theory **
    • Penn & Teller: Fool Us **

    • Influence: Science and Practice - in progress

    Games
    • Mass Effect (PS3) - in progress
    • Lunar Silver Star Harmony (PSP) - in progress

    • Supergirl * - Other than the feminist angle, it's a little too standard.
    • Brooklyn Nine Nine **

    November

    Books
    • Marvel Civil War * - The heroes seemed to act inconsistent with their characters and that threw me off.
    • Rise of Endymion - in progress
    • Influence: Science and Practice **
    • Nudge - in progress

    Games
    • Mass Effect (PS3) *** - A little slow to get used to the older controls but overall excellent space adventure.
    • Super Mario 3D World (WiiU) *** - Great Mario game worthy of his legacy.
    • Lunar Silver Star Harmony (PSP) ** - Combat was as vanilla as it gets but story and characters were great for its time.

I've meant to do this for the last two years but only remember it halfway through the year and then think "what's the point".

I have been so slack on catching up on my backlog of film, and I've been equally as terrible of not seeing theater features at the actual cinema, which I think is a key part of the viewing experience for some big-budget films. Last year I made a goal to watch more film starting from the early 1910's in order to study the progression of the art throughout the decades and I didn't keep up with it, so I'm super stoked to try again.

I am! Series, though, not single issues.

My goal was 30 last year and I was somewhat close. 22 books with single-issue comics not included, as well as a ~five month-ish break in reading. I think I can do it.

    Dancing Chocobo

I read 67 books last year, but I'm in school now so that's not a reasonable goal this time around.

I have yet to determine my goal - 300 short stories? 35 books?

I'M GONNA DO IT THIS YEAR. I REALLY AM because one of my resolutions for 2015 is following through on more things I want to do and I like and I care about and YEAH.

My reading goal for the year is 24 new books. Any re-reads don't count towards the goal, if I should do a re-read. I also have a goal of getting the kids one new (to them) book each month a piece.

I actually do have a movie/film goal. For a year or more I've been talking with a few friends about doing a movie night once a month where we pick a theme and then individually get movies based on that theme. Just gotta organize it! I want to do a different theme each month and actually spend time with my friends while doing something we all enjoy. And I think we might even rent a projector and do garage viewing this summer!

    January

    Books
    * The World Made Straight by Ron Rash - In Progress
    * Wild by Cheryl Strayed - soon to start. Both of these books were recommended by co-workers.

    Movies
    *Guardians of the Galaxy
*The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

Television (I watch a lot of syndicated tv and Netflix)
    *Good Eats
    *Cutthroat Kitchen
    *Law and Order: SVU

    Signature by rubah. I think.

I tried this last year and got a fair ways in. The realization that I could have missed something and had an "incomplete" list bugged me to the point where I dropped it.

So this year I'll just say with 100% certainty that I'm going to watch the new season of The Walking Dead and there's my list.

Are you shooting for 1 short story a day? How long are they usually?

At this point, one per day seems reasonable given my constraints; I certainly cannot replicate my volume of reading from last year. These Alexie stories are really short - most are two or three pages, some are twenty to thirty. It seems like the standard short story is about ten to fifteen pages.

I'm not even going to try this year because I've failed each time so far. I like reading other peoples' progress through the year, though.

My favorite ss writer is Amy Hempel. Her stories swing between 1 and 68 pages ("Tumble Home" is the longest I've read). Micro short stories (1-3 paragraphs) is kinda a thing now. I still don't know what I think about it. But it's a convenient way to pad your numbers! If you're running behind come December, grab The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel, skip "Tumble Home" and you'll knock out 49 stories in single sitting.
