Thread: Difference between battle systems?

    Default Difference between battle systems?

I've played through most Final Fantasy games and when I got to Type-0 on psp and Crisis Core FFVII (Yes, I'm still waiting for the HD edition of Type-0 lol) I noticed they made the battle system different from the other Final Fantasy games (Yeah I think we all knew that). They made Crisis Core and Type-0 more of a Action RPG like game and I think they're doing the same with FFXV and tbh I was impressed. But when you compare the two one's a departure but retains everything Final Fantasy like and would still make me like it regardless of its flaws. But then you have some who are elitists on the old ATB system. I liked the system too but I think I might like the action RPG feel better simply because it requires quick thinking and requires you to be on your feet at all times and even make use of the environment around you, such as taking cover when being shot at in some games. While I liked ATB, I have to sling right on this one and say I like Action RPG better. How do you guys feel about this and which do you like better?

i think for main series games they shouldnt deter from ATB or turn based. i mean i prefer that system and i like ff for its battle system ( aswell as characters and stuff). if they do make a action battle system i will still check the game out.

^^Yeah man FFXV has got me stoked though I feel it has a lot to do with FFXIII to which IMO was a bit of a dissapointment.

I've never been a huge fan of Action-RPGs as much as I ma about turn based, largely because I've always found turn based required more tactics while Action-RPGs can be resolved by button mashing most of the time. With that said, FF and most of the genre have been bad about making that strategy work even in turn based games but titles like MegaTen and Bravery Default show that Turn Based still has a place in gaming.

Part of the reason SE has changed towards it recently is because most of their major FF games like Type-0 and XV are being designed by teams that built Action-RPGs for them. Type-0 is being done by the Crisis Core team and even uses the same engine, while XV started off as an Action-RPG Versus XIII which is being developed by members of the Kingdom Hearts team. It's not like SE hasn't explored different battle systems before in the past with the MMO heavy XII, the Tactical-RPG FFX, and the actual MMO XI and XIV. An Action-RPG mainline FF was bound to happen sooner or later.

Why did they call it Versus XIII to begin with? What is it everything versus Final Fantasy XIII or was it multiplayer based?

I think I read somewhere that it was suppose to be an antithesis to what FF usually is. Considering the response it's been getting with some of the news feeds coming out, I would say it's holding true to that namesake despite becoming FFXV.

In the early days of it's development, Nomura was talking about making a seamless world that incorporated different game modes that could be changed on the fly.
