I haven't played either of those yet, but I do want to eventually. LttP is sharky's favourite and people always rave about it, so one day I want to see what all the fuss is about
LttP is the best Zelda ever, and that's certainly not pure nostalgia talking.
Link's Awakening is the under appreciated gem. People hated the ending, but I think it's earned more appreciation over the years.
I like to think running around with a Chain Chomp (even if it was short lived) made up for any shortcomings the ending had.
There should have been an unlockable option to replace Epona with Bow-Wow in later games. >: |
My friend Delzethin is currently running a GoFundMe account to pay for some extended medical troubles he's had. He's had chronic issues and lifetime troubles that have really crippled his career opportunities, and he's trying to get enough funding to get back to a stable medical situation. If you like his content, please support his GoFundMe, or even just contribute to his Patreon.
He can really use a hand with this, and any support you can offer is appreciated.
Ys Seven follows the hero, Adol, and his friend, Dogi, as they venture to a new land. But being the hero he is, it doesn't take long before he gets involved in a struggle involving the different tribes and the revival of the Dragon Gods...
This is an action RPG. You go up to enemies and hit them with your sword. By attacking you can fill and refill the bar for performing character skills. By performing character skills you build up your bar to unleash the powerful special attacks. There are also different types of attacks that are effective against different enemies, and the player can switch between part members depending on the type of attack needed. There are 9 total playable characters, although some are temporary, and 3 are usable in battle at a time.
General impressions:
I'd played one Ys game before but it was a long time ago and I didn't remember it. But for Christmas from sharky I got the special edition of this game with a little art book and everything, so of course I had to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. It was easy to get in to, it had a variety of playable characters, and an interesting story with an ending that made an impact. Overall it was a really fun game.
Story:
The story is actually very strong I find. It kept me interested the whole way through and the plot twists actually did surprise me and weren't very obvious. I liked seeing the internal conflict of the nation as an outside observer and I was always curious as to what would happen next. The ending was incredibly sad and touching, especially when you grow to care about the characters and what's happening to them. It's also got a good sense of humour, which I could appreciate.
Gameplay:
The game was pretty fun and straightforward and also not too difficult. The negatives I can think of are how often you get your party swapped around for the first half of the game, but that's a pretty minor complaint because it mostly fit the story. The other complain being that they give you the super useful teleport option and take it away shortly after. But other than that it was really fun, and even things like swapping party members was made very easy and fluid.
World:
This game has a vast world to explore with many different areas to provide different sights, which I'm a big fan of. Obviously some I liked more than others, but I did get excited to see where I would be going next and what the area would be like.
Characters:
The characters were a pretty strong point in the game and I can't think of one character I disliked. They were all well written and interesting and provided something unique for the party. Even the non-playable characters were some of the best written, and all of that led to a very touching and emotional ending segment. Even the silent hero managed to have some personality, which isn't always easy to pull off.
Favourite character: Cruxie 7rUzMu3.jpg
Honourable mention: Mishera 84t90m5.jpg
I like Cruxie for how strong of a person she is. Despite her illness she never gives up, she stands up for herself, and she keeps fighting. I think she might even be the strongest attacker of the playable characters. I just admire her strength so much. Mishera is just so refined and sophisticated and wise despite her handicap, which she actually uses to her advantage. She's a great source of wisdom for the party.
Overall it's really fun to play, easy to get in to, and it has a touching and interesting story and great, likeable characters.
Didn't think Twilight Princess would make it on this list.
Didn't think Twilight Princess would make it on anyone's list.
TP would be on my top 100 list. Was my daughter's first Zelda. We played it together. And even without that sentimental silliness bumping it up on the list, it would still be one of my favorites. I enjoyed the Wii controls.
Interesting. I've mostly only heard positive things
Anyways, last one for today~ Going to go ahead and post it up because I'll be busy later and its close enough to time
Xenogears is a story about so many things, so little of which I can tell you without spoiling it. It starts out with our protagonist, Fei, in his peaceful little village, with little memory of when he was young. It doesn't take long before his village is attacked by giant piloted robot things called Gears. Fei then has to make a decision to save his friends lives.
Xenogears has some unique features for an RPG. In battle, there are three types of attacks, each of which uses a certain amount of points to execute. The weaker attacks use less while the stronger ones use more. When all the points are spent, the turn ends. Characters also learn Deathblows by combining the different button combinations. A second aspect of the gameplay is the Gears. The gears follow a similar battle style, but they also use fuel for each action. There are 9 total playable characters with 3 usable in battle at a time.
General impressions:
I'd wanted to play Xenogears since I first heard about it while playing Xenosaga, but at the time I couldn't find it in stores and I didn't have the means to order it online. So I did the next best thing and read the whole game script. It was long, and it was complicated, but the story was very deep and interesting and I very much enjoyed it. So much that I wanted more than ever to play it. Eventually I got it as a very thoughtful birthday present and I got to try it! Unfortunately I was a bit let down. The controls are clunky and I just don't find it fun to play at all. But it was still a great story with good atmosphere and interesting characters, and that's good enough for me.
Story:
By far the best thing about this game and one of my favourite video game stories ever. I enjoy reading psychological theory, one one of my favourites was the ID, Ego, and Super-ego, and here is a game that largely revolves around that. I think it did a good job of exploring different mental issues faced by the characters, it had some interesting religious references, and it had some moments that kept me at the edge of my seat wanting to know more. Excellent story if you enjoy that type of thing, but be prepared to do some reading on the side to fully understand all of it if the subject matter is not something you're familiar with.
Gameplay:
The worst thing about this game to me. I did not enjoy playing it at all. The controls were clunky and awkward, they do a very poor job of explaining some important things you should know for battles, and the gears. Oh gosh the gears. I hated them with a passion. Not only did I not enjoy using the big ugly noisy gears in battle (clunk clunk clunk) but they also have fuel you need to keep an eye on. Not fun for the marathon of bosses they like to throw at you. Oh, limited fuel? Here, fight five bosses in a row. And the jumping. The jumping was tedious. As much as I'm bashing on it, it did have some neat features like the combos and such, but overall it was not a fun game to play.
World:
The world is kind of depressing for the most part, although that's kind of the point, so good job to them on that one. Although I did really love Nisan and the beautiful cathedral Church it had, as well as the music and the atmosphere it provided.
Characters:
My opinion on the characters is a bit odd. I think they're well written, have good depth (well, for the most part) but I don't really like or care about any of them. For me it is important to have at least one character I really like and this game didn't give me that, so it was harder for me to be more invested in their individual stories.
Overall it has a wonderful and interesting story, one of the best I've ever come across, but really bad gameplay. Makes for an excellent book.
And tomorrow we finish off the 70's~~
A great game, but the last time I played it, I could barely get through the first third. It doesn't really hold up. It's not a game with much replay value.
I've had trouble finishing Twilight Princess, and by trouble finishing I mean I quit.
