I think this just might be the weakest one yet.

I think it might be one of the strongest when it comes to bulk of good quality songs compared to having just a few extremely high quality ones. But then, I'm a pretty big fan of the VII, VIII and the full XIII series of music. Not as much as I like XII, but the few that were from XII this time weren't my favourites.

Still More Fighting (aka Fight On!) is probably my favourite piece from the entire FF series, though, so that's a big plus for this round.

Personal faves for me for this round are Fight On!, The Man with the Machine Gun, the Ronso hymn (the best one by far), The Showdown and A Sacred Oratorio. Clearly if you have either electric guitars or Gregorian chanting, I'm sold.

Conversely I think that FF12 has a very weak soundtrack (everything is atmospheric and meh). I tend to usually like songs that have something unique about them, most of the later music all sounds fairly generic to me.

I think FFXII has the best soundtrack despite the "atmospheric" stuff that tends to have that almost-white-noise stuff going on (I'm guessing that's what you mean by atmospheric). But the various city/region songs? I love them. Rabanstre, Dalmasca Estersands, Giza Plains, Phon Coast, stuff like that. I really feel that music is better than most of the older games' songs. However, you do still get more memorable music in the older games, notably VII, VIII and X. I flicked through the complete playlist of VII onwards (I still to this day struggle to enjoy the extreme MIDI music of the older games on the same level as the newer stuff) and I nominated 33 songs for VII and something like 20 songs for XII... but I still like XII better for actually listening to the music rather than pure nostalgia. In other words, if I'd not played any of the games, XII's soundtrack would probably be what I feel has the best pieces.

Not really sure songs like A Sacred Oratorio are any less unique to the likes of the Hymns of the Faith, though.

Interesting to see Shinra Company making it to top spot on the poll so far. I feel it's a good song, but not a great one by any means as after you listen to it for a certain length of time it really gets on my nerves. I have a love/hate thing going with it because of that... nomination worthy because it's a classic piece nostalgia-wise, but overall it's pretty average. Still worth the nomination though, just surprised it's #1.

I think the thing about the ShinRa theme is not that it is the most amazing theme, but just that it sets the tone so perfectly. Just listening to the music you know what ShinRa is all about without ever playing the game.

(I would actually love to see and experiment where a non-video game player has to listen to a whole bunch of video game music and describe the scene that it conveys to them.)

You should make some of your own nominations, get these things up to scratch.

Too many songs from the FFXIII series. Not in any way a fan of the music from that series, so this set only got a few picks from me.

Wait, so I can nominate songs that I feel are too weak and should be left off the ballot?.

No, no, you see, you pick the ones you like so they crowd out the ones you don't.

    Simple.

I really like this idea. Shame I don't know anyone willing to listen to all the music I would want to do this with. xD
