How do you feel about the character upgrade system in this game?

I'm at the beginning of Chapter 3 and I haven't upgraded any of my characters yet. I need to do this tonight!

Can someone tell me though that if I upgrade Fire RF for example, will that upgrade that particular magic for any character that can use that particular elemental spell?

Yep. The upgrade increases it's power for any character that can use that spell. Upgrading Thunder-SHG is a good place to start out.

Imagine how much of a grind it would have been if you had to harvest phantoma for every single character xD
