    Default Religions of ASoIaF

Which ones do you find most interesting?

Personally, I really find the Seven and the Drowned God interesting. The Seven, because I think the way they've split the personality of one single god into seven gods fascinating.

The Drowned God, because they literally drown people and resuscitate them.

"What is dead may never die" is a smurfing cool phrase.

Though so is "The night is dark and full of terrors". I really like how they made shadows servants of light in that religion instead of the cliche of them being evil. So far only that and the Old Gods have been confirmed to have any sort of power though.

Shout out to the Black Goat of Qohor.

I find The Drowned God painfully boring, only barely more than the Red God.

The Faith of the Seven are interesting only in that they are terrifying as smurf.

I favour the Old Gods in this thing, because they seem like part of a more benevolent and serious religion for some reason. Dunno how to describe it really.

There is only one god, and his name is death, and there is only one thing we say to Death. Not today.

Now that I got my obligatory quote out of the way, I like the concept behind the Seven and the old gods the most.

I like the old gods, the red god, and the murderous cult in braavosi the best. The rest just seem to be boring people control that don't show any real mystical power. The braavosi don't either but at least they're interesting.

I'm not sure if we will hear much of the Drowned God though, due to the Greyjoys having barely any exposure for several seasons.

I too find the seven-faced God a fascinating concept. In fact, all the religions in ASoIaF are so interesting to observe. Its interesting to see how the Faith of the Seven is adapted by region. Dorne is very accepting of Homosexuality compared to the rest of Westeros, yet share the same religion.

Are any of the gods in Game of Thrones 'real', in-universe?
By which I mean, do they actually exist within the world of the story?

The Red God seems to offer the most obvious power. But I wonder what the price of that power is? Do the Red Priests and Priestesses get their magical abilities for free for being especially loyal to the Red God, is it magic that they have to be taught, or do they have to make some kind of Faustian-like pact, trading their soul for power?

I definitely feel there is something about the Red God religion that we don't know yet. I imagine it 'may' get explored at some point. Its certainly very mysterious.

But as for other religions, I doubt they will be 'proven' or not. I strongly doubt Martin would reveal that the Seven-faced God is real, or vice versa is false.

Proving or disproving religions isn't really the focus of the story.

    R'hllor is definitely real.

There are some theories (not saying I'm buying them, just that they're out there) that the Drowned God is actually the Great Other. It's backed up by Melisandre saying that she considers Patchface dangerous, and it's implied that he visited the kingdom of the Drowned God.

Agreed, and I'm glad for that. I like my religions to remain ambiguous. For things to be able to be explained rationally, but at the same time be enough reasonable doubt that maybe there's more going on than what we're seeing.

If I'm not mistaken (and I very much may be) GRRM's said that none of the gods will be a deus ex machina. Obviously some are shown to have more power than others, but they're not a key component of the story.
