I... don't really know. My backlog is based on games that I had friends recommend me and titles that I know are similar to what I enjoy.

I sometimes do some TVTroping, though

I check em out a bit. I don't buy games often so I usually already know what I'm in for when I buy one.

My research is me seeing a character and going, "Oh she looks neat, I wonder what game she's from?"

I do a little bit of research if a game catches my attention out of the blue. If there's a game I know I want, I don't give researching a bit of a thought, because why would I if I intend to buy the game?

Apparently, I have been declared banished.

It depends on the game and what franchise it is a part of.
If I have played a previous game in that franchise, I give the new game a little research.
For any other games, my research is a little heavier.

I've run into my fair share of crappy ass games. If its a game series that I've played, than sure.

I'm starting to research Final Fantasy games because the newer one's suck.

That part is right. Final Fantasy 11, 13,13-2, and 13-3 sucks....and 14 because of the server fee. XD

XI was really great, though, even if I only got to play it for two weeks.

I typically check out A. what kind of story/game it is, B. how long it is, C. what people (be it specific persons or general consensus) like about it, and how much they like it. A and C are what can really get me interested in something. B doesn't really have much of an effect on whether or not I play it, but it does have an effect on when I play it.

    Pretty much religiously.

I was a video game journalist for many years, so it happened as a matter of habit, but even before that I've always enjoyed just soaking up information like a sponge. If there is information on something that caught my interest, I just absorb it all endlessly. Heh.

My brain has long since passed its capacity to store most of this information. Hahaha. Now it justs leaks out all over the place and gets quickly forgotten...

Sometimes I feel like I spend more time researching games than playing them.

Not much at all really. Most of my day 1 retail purchases are from developers/series/publishers that I follow and will buy their stuff regardless. I also buy new indies and downloadable games based on the Kinda Funny Games crew's recommendations or if it's blowing up the followers on my twitter feed.
