Some that come to mind are:

Hyper Princess Pitch, which reminds me a lot of Super Smash TV, only with a princess who can deliver explosive piledrivers. It's the perfect game for those who desire some fast paced arcade-y action.

Town of Salem, where players are randomly assigned teams and jobs in a town and need to work together to kill everyone on the opposing team. Rounds tend to be fairly short and there's a lot of fun to be had with mind games, so it's always worth checking out if you fancy yourself a bit on the sneaky side.

Spelunky, which is a decently well known platformer where you explore caves and gather treasure, started out as a free game before receiving a graphical overhaul for console (and PC) re-release. The original version is still free though, and a lot of fun, provided you aren't discouraged by untimely death.

Mega Man: Unlimited is an excellent free title and an example of a Mega Man fan game that outdoes several official Capcom releases. The game is challenging without being unfair, the weapons are (almost) all useful, the stages have enjoyable themes and gimmicks, the bosses are generally fun fights, and I actually like the way the developer decided to end the game, though I know some who didn't. Absolutely worth trying for any Mega Man fan.

On the subject of Mega Man, Rockman 7 Famicom also bears mention, as it takes the, in my opinion, underrated Mega Man 7 and remakes it in the style of an NES MM game. I don't find that it is necessarily better than the SNES version, but it is a free game and as good as the official title.

Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! is a pretty fun point and click adventure game that I played a few years back. You take control of pirate (sort of) Nelly Cootalot and explore an island on a mission to discover what has happened to the spoonbeak birds. The game isn't particularly difficult and has a light hearted and enjoyable atmosphere, so it is totally worth checking out if you are even remotely a fan of point and click adventure games.

OpenLieroX is an awesome, real-time take on the Worms series, with tons of silly weapon packs and stages and multiplayer support. Unfortunately, the game hasn't been updated in a long time and I don't know how well online multiplayer works, but it's great for LAN games.

In a very similar vein is Soldat, which is just as frantic as Liero, but with people instead of worms and less silly weapons. I also remember more varied game modes and stable online multiplayer, but it's been a looooong time since I last played this, so I might be wrong.

And finally there is Daggerfall, which is now free on the Elderscrolls website. It's dated now, and you need to set up a Dos emulator to play it, but it is a great game.

Thanks for sharing, Shiny. That game was a lot of fun and very well thought out. I enjoyed it.

    I second Spelunky.

Frog Fractions. Amazingly fun game. One of my all time favourites. The soundtrack is rockin', too. Takes roughly an hour to complete and by the end of it hopefully you'll feel it was worth it.
    Bow before the mighty Javoo!

    LOL Town of Salem.

I became addicted to it last month.

People will really do anything just to survive. And "Survivors" are always #$%^&.
I'm avid fan of Final Fantasy Tactics and a chess player.

I just remembered this site exists: https://www.atari.com/arcade

You can play some of their old arcade games for free. It's how I played Yars' Revenge last year.

A winner is you. Though there are paid versions of that, with updates that make it awesome, it's still pretty awesome in its original freeware state
