Default So does SE just respect this game more than the other FFs or what?

FFI: Origins release, too many remakes/enhanced ports with gameplay changes to count
    FFII: same as FFI
FFIII: complete 3D remake with a completely changed story, PC release
FFIV: complete 3D remake + sequel, Chronicles release, PC release
FFV: anime sequel + enhanced mobile port, Anthology release
FFVI: enhanced mobile port, Anthology release
FFVII: film sequel, tps sequel, two prequels, anime OVA, PC release + international version
FFVIII: PC release + Chocobo World
FFX: sequel + 2 HD remasters + International Version
FFXI: various expansion packs with continued support + PC release
    FFXII: sequel + International Version
FFXIII: two sequels + PC release + International version
FFXIV: sequel + expansions with continued support + PC release
FFXV: already talks of sequels and a PC release

So why do you suppose FFIX has never gotten any sort of expanded treatment? It sold very well and was extremely well received, to this day remaining the highest rated FF title on Metacritic, yet nearly fifteen years later there's no sequels, no prequels, no ports to other platforms, much less PC, no remake or remaster or International re-release of any sort, nothing.

Perhaps it's because it was the last FF to come out before Squaresoft/Square Enix adopted the "milk these games for every dime they're worth" mentality?

How popular is it in Japan? Because that may have something to do with it. Then again, that didn't stop the VI stuff.

    I don't know.

I think someone @ Squeenix deleted the FFIX master file or something. Yes, Square is that inept.

FFIX has a sequel. It's called Dragon Ball.

Technically it was released to be playable on PSN? Does that count?

Supposedly they did that with the original Kingdom Hearts and had to salvage and rebuild the entire game's assets from a retail copy for the HD Remaster. So it's not out of the realm of possibility that they did the same with an even older title.

From what I've read, it comes down to the director pushing for the game to be made. Kitase and Sakaguchi have no issues revisiting past glories but Ito doesn't. The only reason XII International was made was because it's technically the real FFXII. Squenix forced the development team to rush the game when it started taking too long and so they cut out content and balancing. The IZJS version is actually closer to the game Ito wanted to make XII to be.

I do remember someone at SE saying he wanted to make a sequel to the game...

Well considering Ito has been MIA over there for years, that's a possibility.

Here's hoping he's been doing exactly that in secret this whole time.

Doubtful. My bet is that he's been working on a new game. He's been absent from the spotlight since FFXII IZJS was released which was before the HD craze.
