What does taste have to do with anything?
Persona 3 is the better story. It's better told, has more solid theme work, uses characterization better, has better dramatic moments, etcetera.
Persona 4 is the better game. It gives you more control over your characters, has better combat flow, MUCH better dungeons, and streamlines a lot of the quirks of its predecessor.
And neither of these points have anything to do with what you like.
I mean, let's look at movies. I like Street Fighter The Movie (because Raul Julia is the best M. Bison ever). I don't like Citizen Kane (at all). Would I EVER pretend that Street Fighter is a better film than Citizen Kane? Heck no.
You can like a film, or a game, regardless of it's overall quality. You can also like it for different reasons. I adore Persona 3 because of it's overall brilliant writing and some of its characters. But I admit that it has its share of problems.
Persona 4 utterly destroys it in terms of gameplay. Even in terms of writing, it can hold its own. The relationship between Yu, Nanako, and Dojima in Persona 4 is an utterly brilliant family drama that I would put just as high, if not higher, than any relationship in Persona 3. The Social Links are far better written than the ones in the original Persona 3.
Persona 4 is actually probably the better overall game, if I'm analyzing things as objectively as possible. But Persona 3 is definitely the better piece of literature, because it has a main story that is basically FLAWLESS, and for that reason, I prefer Persona 3.
Also, you are absolutely going to love Nanako.
