It's both. It is a hand guard, so you can hold it like a normal sword. However one side of the hand guard is longer, and molded to fit into your hand. So you can also hold it with that section and treat the weapon like a tonfa.

It's an interesting idea. Not trying to sway your vote, just think it's an interesting design.
