Thread: Favourite Original Soundtracks

  1. #1

    Default Favourite Original Soundtracks

We have a favourite composer thread, but we don't have a thread for individual soundtracks (none recent that I found). So which soundtracks do you love?

    I like:
    The Hobbit (GC, PS2, XBox)
    Mega Man X4 - X6
Mother 2 (otherwise known as Earthbound)
The Legend of Zelda - the 3D games' OSTs are my favourites
Final Fantasy I, VIII, and X
    Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness

this is kind of like repeating the other thread just in albums

Well, I figured it could be different enough. Even though your favourite composers might be X and Y, there could be several soundtracks not created by them that you might like. I don't know who made The Hobbit OST, by wow is that something special! I don't care for Castlevania or it's music much (although I feel like I should), but I like the game and the music for Castlevania 64 and Legacy of Darkness.

I figured it was a good place to list the best works by a favourite composer, and also ones that would otherwise be overlooked because it wasn't done by a favourite composer.

I'm going to exclude Final Fantasy stuff from the list because, well, look where we're at! Of course I love me some FF tunes! For the record just assume most of my love is for the first ten games of the series, along with a few tracks beyond that point. So off the top of my head here are random soundtracks I enjoy:

    *Metroid Prime (entire trilogy)
*Metal Gear Solid series (mainly the first three)
*Super Mario Galaxy (original and sequel)
    *FTL
    *VVVVVV
    *Super Sexagon
    *Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    *Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
    *Castlevanai: Lament of Innocence
*Sonic (all Genesis titles from the main series)
    *Earthbound
    *Mother 3
    *Portal
    *Portal 2
    *Most Zelda soundtracks
    *Most Dragon Quest soundtracks
    *Chrono Trigger
    *Chrono Cross
    *Rez
    *Shovel Knight
*Mega Man (original series and a good chunk of X)

I think I'll stop now. I love me lots of game music and if one were to ask me at a different moment I'd probably name a bunch of other stuff with few repeats!

I also like the Super Mario World and Crash Bandicoot 2/3 soundtracks a lot. Oh and the Ace Attorney series' OST.

    In no particular order..

Obviously, the Final Fantasy series has great soundtracks.
    'nuff said.

The Ace Attorney trilogy (i.e the first three games)
By the way, check out the jazz reworkings, some of them are brilliant.

    Tomb Raider: Legend.
Especially the end credits song. That trout is SMOOOOTH.

    Wet.
Rockabilly whilst jumping through the air shooting people. Good times.

    Halo 3.
I do like good use of an orchestra.

    Bioshock Infinite.
The soundtrack is very atmospheric, although obviously it's the anachronistic reworkings of classic songs which are the real musical standouts in this game.

Totally forgot Mass Effect 2. I love the recurring ominous score that plays throughout.
