Black Single Fathers

When discussing what Square might do with Barret in the FFVII Remake on another site, I posted a picture of Sazh as proof that Square probably won't be toning down any of the....uh...you know. The stereotyping.

A poster, in response, made this observation I had never realized:

"You know, it's funny, but both Barret and Sazh are single fathers, and it's a pretty significant part of their characters too."

That's a neat little detail and I wonder if it's a coincidence? These two are the only black party members I can recall and to have them both largely defined by that trait is...well, not worrisome, but intriguing.

Why would it be worrying? The stereotype is usually black fathers who don't want anything to do with their kids. I'm not saying Barret's not a racist or stereotyped character, but in the instance of being a single dad raising his kid, I think it flies in the face of racist stereotypes.
