I always thought Krilean's Lab was way worse than Babel Tower.

Krelian's Lab was actually kinda interesting. As the mad scientist's lair, it was full of horrible and yet fascinating things. All the captured humans being used for experiments you can come across for one thing.

Eridanus. ERI-smurfING-DANUS from Strange Journey. It's a literal hedgemaze-labyrinth with pitfalls and teleport puzzle thrown in for good measure. And this is part of the game where the gloves come off and the random encounters start kicking your ass and they don't have any weaknesses to take advantage of.

I'm with you, the Mage's Tower arc in Origins is the worst.

I honestly don't consider it that bad. The platform sections can be a bit annoying if you lack patience but it really wasn't all that bad.
Honestly, as long as you are patient and know to get into a fight before making a jump, this section of the game isn't too difficult. If want really wonky 3D platforming I'd point you to the Sega Saturn.

Oh man, Strange Journey. Yeah those dungeons can lead to rage quitting pretty quickly but I honestly found them so refreshing after what feels like ages of lackluster dungeon design in the genre. With that said, it took me ages to beat this game because I would get fed up with them. I feel Sector Grus was the worst though, invisible doorways, teleporting, pitfalls, and random encounters designed to get you prepped for the final sector.

Babel Tower is the ONE GODDAM DUNGEON where you could actually benefit from the full 360 camera. And so the game goes and decides "no, smurf you, you can only turn the camera a little bit for this portion."

And did I mention for the final part there is a transition area? You are climbing up so high that the game loads from one "level" of the area to the next. And if you miss one jump in this second "level" you will plummet all the way back down to the first "level" and have to redo everything all over again, including fixed encounters on every platform.

Guess who that happened to. Guess who missed that jump and fell all the way back down to another screen.

    Burn in Hell, Babel Tower.

    P.S.

GEARS CAN FLY. THEY DON'T NEED TO PLATFORM.

Yeah! The dungeons in Strange Journey were brutal - but that's what made then awesome! You really felt that you were making a huge achievement by progressing to the next floor. It was refreshing and felt insanely rewarding. I really need to replay this game soon.

Well then just don't fall and you'll save yourself the frustration.

    P.S.

My guess is that Sigurd is a real tightwad when it comes to fuel, seeing how he has to pay for all of the Young Master's... incidents.

I gotta admit, if someone played Xenogears based on the "strength of its dungeon design" I might have to look to see if Hell has frozen over.

Dungeon design largely comes down to tolerance level. Gears dungeons can be frustrating but I never found them boring which is why I like them. I'll take wonky platforming and maze like structure over boring wallpaper dungeons like FFX and XIII.

Yeah. You know how lots of games have that one part in an otherwise good game that you just loathe, that you might once in awhile think about replaying said game but then you remember that one part and you're like "Ehhhh nah, forget it." Xenogears' dungeons as a whole do that to me. And I really do love Xenogears. I just haven't been able to muster up the will to drudge through those dungeons again in the last ten years or so.
    I like Kung-Fu.

In Origins, definitely, that section just draaaged. In II and Inquisition, though, the Fade sequences were actually quite well thought out.

In 2 it's not even really a dungeon. You just fight a couple demons and leave.

But yes, the Fade was amazingly awful in Origins.
