That's the biggest problem with Origins's approval system. The easiest way to get Oghren to like you, for example, is to just buy him loads of mead. Yay, I'm enabling your obvious drinking problem! GO FRIENDSHIP!!!

They fix it in 2 and Inquisition. 2 has a really small number of gifts you can get for people - one or two per person, if I remember rightly - and Inquisition doesn't have any.
