I really can't decide. XIII has my fav soundtrack overall, but there's so much perfection in all eras
PS1 & 2 eras. I can't decide which is better though so I'm not voting. Ha.

I didn't loathe it. I just feel pity for it because it's such a hilariously terrible game that could have been something great. PS1 which has IX and VIII which I think are still the best two soundtracks in the series.
PS1 followed very closely by SNES.

I'm going to say the PS1 era. The likelihood being steeped in nostalgia. Critically, I'd say that the Snes era was just as strong compositionally. As graphics evolved, there was a need for the soundtrack to take on a more cinematic quality, which in my opinion, has resulted in an ambient soundtrack that *works* but isn't necessarily as musical and enjoyable standalone.
VII and IX had the best music in the series, so that one!
IV and X get honorable mentions.

PSX and it's not even close.
PS2 era, followed by PSX, then SNES, then NES.

SNES easily. But the PS1 era is nice, too. PS2 stuff was hit and miss, but the overall soundtrack to FFX was great.
VIII had the best music. You can't beat Liberi Fatali.
