    Question Doctor Who, Lady Doctor?

    http://comicbook.com/2015/08/18/hayl...on-doctor-who/

Hayley Atwell, star of Agent Carter, says she would love to play The Doctor in a future incarnation of the show. I'm not a Whovian, but I'd be interested in this. What are your thoughts?

I'm personally in the camp of not having a female Doctor just for the sake of having a female Doctor. If they'd like to do a storyline that makes sense for a female Doctor, sure. But the character has always been male, and I'm not sure how well it'd translate to being female. Same goes for my feelings on having a minority Doctor just for the sake of having a minority Doctor.

Basically, if they decide to take the overarching plots in a direction where it makes sense, and they find the right actor or actress for the job, cool. But doing it just for the sake of is dumb. Doctor Who isn't a show that's failed to be inclusive, so it's not a show that really needs to do something just for the sake of diversity.

A female Doctor definitely ought to happen at some point. I don't think there'd need to be a specific storyline for it. It'd been well-established by this point that Gallifreyans can change sex when they regenerate.

For me, the 'the Doctor's always been x' argument is flawed, at best. Before Eccleston, all of the Doctors had accents from the South of England. Does that mean that Eccleston's Doctor was less 'Doctory'? Of course not. There's no reason a female Doctor would be any less 'Doctory' than a male Doctor.

Sure, sounds good! I'd hope this also coincided with Doctor Who not being grimdark and horrible again though. Given how during the Russel T era Steven Moffat always did the best episodes, I've been disappointed with the direction he's taken the series as lead writer. But sure, female Doctor sounds good! I got the feeling the whole storyline with 'Missy' was a sort of toe-in-the-water job for that. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a woman take over at the next regeneration.

My vote would be for Keeley Hawes.

I agree. When it's well established already that the Doctor could change sex when he regenerates, and their personalities change dramatically every time anyway, I can't imagine any reason for not doing. I don't buy an appeal to tradition or the idea that there needs to be a story that gives a reason for it to happen. Why can't it just happen? It really wouldn't be a big deal.

Bad idea. She would be spreading cooties throughout all of time and space.

Happy for the Doctor to be male, female, whatever, but it certainly won't happen whole Moffat is around, he seems to enjoy telling any critics of how he writes women etc to take a hike.

I would probably start watching the show again if Hayley Atwell turned up.
