Riding the skateboard to work?

I tried using a skateboard once, damn thing nearly killed me. I never learned the knack of using a piece of wood with wheels attached as a means of transportation.

It would make sense to ride a bike or skateboard to work if it was close by, but not if it was further away.

Sort of related. I went to the grocery store earlier and someone had a bicycle chained to the bike rack with these HUGE tires on it. Not huge as in large in diameter, but very, very thick. I suppose I should have said that in the first place. Anyway, they were the bicycle equivalent to monster truck tires.

I've spent all day thinking about this. Why are the tires that big? Are they for off road purposes? Don't most bicycles handle being off road well enough with normal tires? Did they get shot with that gun from Live And Let Die that inflates stuff? Do they make the bike easier to ride for convenience? Do they make it tougher to ride for endurance?

TL;DR: Easier to get around because of better grip and can bike through stuff like snow and sand much easier.

But still. I live in the suburbs. Kind of an overkill. The investigation continues...

I haven't posted in this thread for a while, but I thought I'd bring the topic back, because it popped up into my head again. Since some people ride their bikes or motorcycles to work, can people ride their skateboards to work? And I'm not just talking high school and college students, I'm also talking post-college graduates who are in the workforce.

I would regard a skateboard as a short-distance method. Maybe a mile at the most? Bicycles I reckon any more than 5 miles is a bit of a slog. I don't think a motorbike is safe for doing really long distances say... more than 20 miles. Any more than that and you're looking at a car or a train.

I work with a few people who skateboard to work. To be honest, it looks a bit silly and I'd just get a bike. It's faster and arguably safer.
