I found FFXII to be incredibly forgettable. Fun to play, but nothing memorable about it... except for Balthier.

I suppose, if I really have to think hard about any flaws in FFXII, is that the main story does rise and fall like a wave. Your main journey legs are fairly mediocre. The Sandsea is fairly forgettable, maybe even annoying, but then Raithwall's tomb was quite interesting. Your journey south to Mt. Bur-Omisace is only slightly better. The Garif were fun, and there was a small interlude with the Veira but it was dull at times. But then the events on the mountain were really interesting. Your trek north was pretty weak and long, but Archades was excellent.
In short, you could make an argument that the main plot brightens and dims. Certainly the 'travelling' parts were the weakest moments in the game.
