Dancing Chocobo Grim Dawn (and Titan Quest) Discussion

I don't know how much discussion this will generate here cause it's not really the style of game this forum tends to talk about BUT... has anyone here played Grim Dawn? It's currently in alpha but it's really quite playable for being an alpha. It's an old-school ARPG like Diablo 2, but with zombies and Lovecraft monsters instead of demons. It's got a neat skill tree too. It's really fun!

It sounds interesting but when I read old-school and diablo 2 together I cringed at my age.

If it makes you feel any better I'm probably older than you (I actually have no idea how old you are but I feel like I'm older than most people here by a couple years)

Well, as good as Diablo 2 was, Titan Quest was better. Grim Dawn has a lot of Titan Quest in it. It's actually not as good as Titan Quest (unfortunately) but it is pretty good, I've played up to level 40-ish I believe and finished all the currently released content as of a month or so ago. I'd rather play it than Diablo 3, certainly.

I've heard fantastic things about Titan Quest and plan on playing that next.

Is Titan Quest a steam, separate PC, or console game?

OOC:I knew I was older but I couldn't remember by how much so I checked and it's almost exactly a year

Yeah although I can't recommend the non-Gold edition, the expansion adds and fixes too much. It is the best Diablo-style game I've played, and I've played a lot of them.

BUT Grim Dawn has a lot in common with TQ, and is made by the same developers. With enough time I'm hoping it can be as good.

As it's not finished it's obviously not possible to say for sure how GD will measure up to TQ, but so far I'm very impressed and I've put plenty of time into it. I actually bought into GD very early, earlier than was wise really, but in this case I've not regretted it for a second. I do love the polish in GD so far though, and whilst it may not quite reach Titan Quest's level of ARPG nirvana it's certainly coming close.

e; And yeah if you get TQ make sure you get Immortal Throne as well, as Spuuky says.

I kickstarted Grim Dawn however long ago so I've certainly seen it come a long way, there are game elements that just feel so wasted, though (factions in general, reputation, "choice" which actually does nothing). The biggest shortcoming compared to TQ is that a) it feels less "epic" and everything feels like one small area (even if the playable area is actually large) instead of this giant world-spanning journey, and b) I don't think there's nearly enough cross-class depth to support making a huge variety of builds like TQ did.

The things it does well are set the atmosphere and not mess up the core game mechanics (like a lot of Diablo clones somehow do).

I've not tried enough different builds to comment on B but I do agree with A, the play area is nice and big, but it doesn't really feel it, not the way TQ does.
