Combat does take some getting used to in this series. At first it's awkward and clunky but you get used to it. Then, before too long, it doesn't bother you any more. All the ammo/armor/whatever upgrades can be overwhelming though. I generally just pick one for each character and then replace it with a higher level of the same because I don't care enough to min/max every single time I get in a fight.
