History of Remake

So, I've been thinking and I don't remember how/when the whole idea of a Final Fantasy VII remake got started. I know that for as long back as I can think (I first played Final Fantasy VII in 2002) there was always a call for a remake. So how and when did this all come about? Just curious.

I remember everyone freaking out about the tech demo, and I think thats where alot got on the idea but Im thinking (could/am probably wrong) that there was quite a buzz before both though.
