I've never watched any of the anime series, but The Golden Animation apparently only covers the new additions introduced in P4: Golden. There's the original animation series which covers the events of the game proper.

But no, play the game. It's really good! The animation apparently makes the P4MC's character less friendly in certain places, so play the game.
