February 17th - Soul Calibur IV
So now we moved on to our last Soul Calibur game, and the worst of the bunch. They made all of the characters look pretty much the same and the customization can make them look identical if you want to. On top of all looking alike, they all look different from what they did in their previous iterations as well. The bright side is I made a custom look for Sophitia and I LOVE IT and wish I could show it to you guys. Btw, if it wasn't clear, the images shown in this thread are not of what we're playing
It's still a fun game though and there are some super pretty battle arenas, not that we got to fully experience them because the random liked to give us one particular arena every second match. But there is a large character roster, including Amy, a character I really like. Overall the game was actually pretty easy to get the hang of once we turned off the accidental taunt shoulder button, but sometimes the controls could be unresponsive.
Keeping up the tradition, I reigned supreme as a Soul Calibur champion. I don't know why. Maybe my gameplay style just meshes well with this series. I used the handicap at first but then turned it completely off and still stayed pretty on top of things, with characters I didn't know well nonetheless. But sharky put up a fight and he had my number for quite a few rounds. He liked to ring me out a whole bunch. It was fun, but definitely not the best the series has to offer. Also, the ladies end up in their underwear way too often . I might try SCV just because it's super cheap at this point so why not. playing Darth Vader was a thing, also
Ugh, this game. The beginning of the end. And proof that Namco and Team Soul have no idea what people want. This was back in the day when reservations and pre-paying for a game were fairly uncommon in my town, and for me in general. And this is one of the first ones I took the plunge for. And one of the only games I've ever traded back in for store credit to get other games. Not immediately, I tried for over a year to enjoy the game, but just couldn't. There were a few redeeming qualities, the graphics were fairly decent. It was pretty. But ugh. The terrible loss and addition of characters, the weird changes to some fighting styles, that damn tower that was like the ONLY THING YOU COULD DO IN SINGLE PLAYER. Soul Calibur 2 and especially 3 totally spoiled its fans. Tons of characters, tons of decent fighting styles, tons of things to do. Both a story and chronicle mode, as well as generic arcade if you want. And the cut scenes were actually rendered. There were paths and choices. Then they decide that the best you get is a picture. Not even a color picture. They obviously thought people only played Soul Calibur 3 in online matches. Since that's like the only thing you can do with a fighting game, right? Because those online matches on the PS2 were the best yo. smurf you Namco. smurf you Team Soul. Get over Ivy's boobs and make a real game. I need a beer.. lol /rant
February 18th - King of Fighters XIII
Today we played King of Fighters XIII which is much like NeoGeo Battle Coliseum in that it takes a bunch of SNK characters and meshes them together in to one game. In this one, you play as teams of three. There's no tagging though, you pick the order you want and once one is defeated, the other comes out. Once all three are defeated, you've won the round.
We tied 6-6, although I was using a handicap. It's appropriate now with the injured hand! Some fights were pretty down to the wire and even the ones I lost I overall did pretty well. EXCEPT for one fight when he used King and beat three of my characters with his one. I have no idea why he's so good with characters named King, but it is annoying! Overall I think I am improving and getting a handle on things more now. Not always, but I'm better at KoF XIII than when I last played it.
It's a fun game. Not a button masher game though, you need some precise inputs and a lot of arrow button pushes. I like Athena and her PSYCHO BALL~~ Which I actually managed to pull out a few times. She glitters and everything. I also found out she's unlockable in NeoGeo battle coliseum and you can bet I'm going to go back and play it again and unlock her. PSYCHO BALL
That whole post, with your avatar and sig, make you like like a giant SNK fangirl.
My team is King, Hwa Jai, and Higashi. It's probably a terrible team, but there's definitely a theme to it.
Hey, if it's a zoning character, I'm going to use the moves that play to their strength. Not every character is a rush-down style.
February 19th - Tekken 6
Another day, another Tekken. I suppose the shocking thing here is that I actually won by one match thanks to a generous handicap. I never got good enough to take down the handicap, and it generally floated between 15 and 20 extra points. But I tried my best and that's what counts!
Tekken 6 is a fun game and my favourite Tekken game. I don't enjoy it as much here though because all I can do is press buttons and hope to pull something out, and I'm fighting against someone who can do long combos and stuff. It's not really fun, I'm going to be honest. Kind of bums me out, even though I won. After Fightbruary and the last Tekken game next week, I'll stick to fighting the computer on easy :P
There's a huge cast of characters in this. 40 to be exact. That's 40 fights with AT LEAST two rounds. It's a time investment. Tekken Tag 2 also has a massive cast but you get to play two at a time, so I'm not sure how much time it will take compared to this. It's a time sink. But you get to do custom outfits and things and I made an adorable outfit for Lili and a really pretty one for Anna that I got to use There's also some really nice backgrounds!
My girlfriend haaaates spammers. Maybe its the more professional fighter in me, but I've never really been bothered by someone using one move all the time. I kinda feel like if I get beat by just one move, that's my own fault. Jump over it, block it, counter it, something. There's always a way and its your job to find out how to get around it if you want to win. I highly doubt any of these fights relied solely one one solitary move, but generally in my experience, the person doing that to me only wins 1 round. Either I figure out what to do about that move, or the character their using is just an OP boss and it wasn't my fault anyway lol
Tekken 6 is my favourite fighting game, as I think I've mentioned. I just look back on my time playing it so fondly, especially with couch co-op as its one of the few games outside of sports sims that me and my friends all got into and practiced. In my prime I was able to play a pretty mean Asuka.
February 20th - Aquapazza
Today we played one of my favourite 2D fighting games, Aquapazza! The game is just so over the top and ridiculous in terms of story and moves and I just think it's a lot of fun. It has a lot of really bright environments, a large cast of female characters, and simple button commands, all things I am fond of!
In this game you get both a playable fighter and a support fighter, who will help you in battle by doing certain moves. Either attacking or healing or blocking or whatever. The bum thing is that if you get hit, your support characters move gets cancelled, and you have to wait a while to charge them back up. The cast isn't super large, if you don't include the supports, so it didn't take long to finish.
I won something like 8-6. It was very close and I think the main reason I won was because I was using the simplified controls and he was using the standard controls. Otherwise it probably would have been pretty even. I think most of the characters are from visual novels and there's a wide range of play styles and it was pretty fun!
February 21st - Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition
Also known as Mortal Kombat 9. I wasn't super looking forward to this one because the story mode kicks my butt every single time, but apparently in VS I am not too bad. I won a bunch of rounds in the beginning but it evened out more in the end. I might have won a few more matches, I'm not sure exactly.
It was fun. The gameplay was pretty smooth and easy to do. I found myself often coincidentally doing the right moves/jumps at the right time to save my butt. I needed to start guarding more by the end of it when sharky got better at beating me, and well, I'm not a good blocker. I'm more of an offensive play style. So that part was challenging.
Lots of characters, a decent amount of female character, all of whom have ridiculous cleavage that we think is just copy/pasted from girl to girl. Jade was fun to use and I am sad she's not in X. Which I'll probably have to play using my Vita as a controller and that's going to be rough. In the meantime though, this game was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it. There were some really close, tense rounds. It was also neat seeing some of the stages from the first two MK games we played at the beginning of the month!
February 22nd - Dead or Alive 5: Last Round
So today was supposed to be Virtua Fighter 5 but alas the game didn't want to work and so instead we played Dead or Alive 5. These things happen, so we'll be buying a new, cheap PS3 fighting game this weekend to fill our empty slot. Probably either Skull Girls or Injustice: Gods Among Us. We will think about it!
This game is a lot of fun. I really enjoy it, it's one of my favourite fighting games, lots of ladies, lots of costumes, easy and smooth gameplay, nice arenas. It's just a shame half of the ladies need to be half-naked and it's also a challenge sorting through all the borderline porn to get some regular images of this game. But it's really a ton of fun and I always enjoy playing it.
sharkson won the most rounds but I put up a good fight and actually wasn't half bad at the game. Most of the matches I lost were actually very close and it was common for one of us to win with just a sliver of health left. It made for some good, tense matches. AND this has some Virtua Fighter characters in it, so it was a good tie in. A lot of fun, great game, good matches.
Despite the perv, it is still one of my favorite fighting game franchises. I recently acquired Last Round for PS4 on the cheap myself, and though I've played like every sequel leading up to it, this is actually the first one I've owned. And it's like coming home. If only Soul Calibur could have stayed the course, and I'd have two fantastic 3D fighting game franchises. But at least Street Fighter kinda sorta keeps it real, and I can have a comfortable old 2D fighter and a comfortable old 3D fighter
I should go unlock some opera dresses for Sophitia ... er- or Helena, or whoever she is :3
February 23rd - Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst
So if that isn't a long enough title for you, I don't know what is. Tonight we broke the tradition of using every character because, well... THERE ARE SO MANY CHARACTERS, YOU GUYS. We don't even have them all unlocked and, discounting duplicate characters (like the 4 Narutos you can play), we still had like 40. I like large casts of characters but that's just too much. I'm sick, I'm tired, I was at school all day. It was too much.
Especially for this game since, honestly, it's not that great. It's kind of an RPG/Fighting game, so the battle system is not... the best, I guess. It's perfectly fun for a few battles here and there, but overall it's kind of meh. It's super easy to spam special moves, some support characters are way better than others. Ino is best. Other than a select few, most projectiles are awful and there are limited combos. Just meh, I guess.
I won. It was something like 8-7 or something like that. Most of the rounds were very close. Even with that though it wasn't as exciting as some of the other fighting games. But if you like Naruto, then be my guest. You'll have SO MANY characters to choose fro so more than likely your favourite character will be available. I'm still trekking through the story mode, slowly, which is a bit better. But just as a fighting game? Not really that good.
