Did you ever want the option to pick and choose your party in this game instead of having the story dictate who is in it? I mean I never really cared for Gus, so having the option to drop him for someone else would have been neat.

Yeah it's frustrating because by the time you get a character they are frustratingly under-leveled and oftentimes don't last very long at all.
