For people who play MineCraft: Which mods do you like and why? I'm just getting back into it lately with a couple of friends and we're having a great time, but now we're considering starting our own server with mods custom to what we like. Just trying to figure out how to split the must-haves and the totally-wants away from the hey-this-is-neats. Tricky!

What are you doing, broadly speaking? Survival or Creative?

also there needs to be a big EoFF minecraft adventure sometime.

Well, this one won't be any huge EoFF thing as I'm going to be paying for the hosting, which means extremely limited numbers of people, probably 10 at most. It's very much a learn-as-we-go thing atm. But if I figure things out a bit more, who knows, maybe someday I'll get an EoFF MC server for a while!

Survival, to answer the question! I've been using a CrundeeCraft server recently and it's been super fun, but I want to have more control over what I can do, hence the desire to set up my own server. I'd like to use the full CrundeeCraft pack but it's looking more like I'll create my own mudpack as there are some things it doesn't have that I'd be keen on using, and for the sake of the server, I'd like to remove some things, too.

Personally speaking, I adore exploring, finding dungeons and items people want, killing enemies and collecting hats. I play with a couple of people, one who loves organising and decorating, while the other likes pushing towards large goals like reactors and traveling into space. We compliment each other's gameplay pretty well.

You play like me! Though there's also elements of larger goals in my style too. I'm at work so I haven't got a list but mods I've liked on servers I've joined have added new exploration content like new mobs and biomes. I've always wanted to play the dinosaur mod!

Steve will be the best person to answer this though, I know he's set up his own server and experimenting with mods on it. I shall summon him. Trust me, nobody on this planet takes the game as seriously as Steve.

Also tbf a big EoFF game is like 5 people these days xD but I understand you wouldn't want to ruin your group dynamic by inviting rubes like me along. Still, if they're unavailable one day and you fancy getting lost in a gigantic cavern, give me a shout!

    Paul has summoned me!

So quick overview of mods depends on what kind of stuff you want to see.

For example sky block mods such as Agarian Skies 2 adds a questing element (more designed for single player experience imho) and additional challenges such as starting on a 3x3 patch with 1 dirt and 8 saplings to get going with. Agarian skies 2 also incorporates some great mechanical engineering mods and farming mods which will if configured correctly work together.

From a less "magic" more survival based perspective you're talking mods like the Terra Firma Craft mod pack. Which actually works a lot better as a server based game. TFC sets you up in the paleolithic tech era and you work forwards to iron and steel. Some mods will add redstone crafting and machinery back in though with suitably added complexity. This is currently my mod of choice to play because it adds so much.

The streams mod is a good essential one as it adds current to rivers allowing additional challenge and build options. There's other weather and environmental mods I have/know of but need to be at my pc not my phone to discuss.

For sheer badassery the archemedies ships mod should be installed if you have a compatible server set up. This mod allows ships and airships to be built which are rideable around the map.

Base server set up is relatively easy so long as you remember to port forward. Mods I'm finding very complicated to get working right on my own little server but tbh I've stepped back in to pc gaming less than 6 months ago after a decades absence at the least so you'll be fine I am sure

At the moment we're looking to go for something like this. Still deciding on a lot, obviously. Essentially we test with the "Need" stuff, then expand towards the right as we see fit. Still not sure on a lot of the Crundee mods though - it's possible we took a lot of them for granted, or they could be relatively useless.

Mmm from your list there here's a few of the "lower end of the scale/unknown mods" you've got that I think should be moved up and why:

Archimedes' Ships Plus - Airships and ships that can be used to sail/fly around should be enough said if I'm honest. The one big bug I've seen so far is in a modded version of this mod to make it work with Terra Firma Craft where it caused a ship's blocks to change direction based on the cardinal direction the ship was stopped in. This is likely to be a bug unique to the TFC version of the mod due to how blocks in TFC work. (you have a hammer and chisel tool and can carve blocks in to slabs, stairs or even bit by bit).

Pam's HarvestCraft - I've done a fair few mods now and Pam's is one of the best farm mods around. Adds in lots of different food stuffs and much more depth to the food stuff. I know you can survive on a 64 stacks of 64 steaks forever but this is fun and works well with other mod types like skyblock to add some much needed depth to the world.

Extra Utilities - This is a basic yes to most modded minecraft games. Extra items like lanterns you can craft (very useful in world mods like TFC where torches burn out over time)

Iguana Tinker Tweaks - If you're going with Tinker Tools you need the Iguana Tweaks. Effectively allows you to "level up" your tools and gain small bonuses to the tinkers tools so you may have an axe that's faster or self repairs. This is pretty much standard if Tinkers is on your must have list as it makes keeping your tools in good shape feel more rewarding. Tinkers Tools on it's own simply makes tool making more complex.

Tinkers' Mechworks - Pretty much all the tinkers mods are fun. This one from what I recall allows for you to make more specialised mechanical stuff.

I've heard many good things about growthcraft but I'm going to be honest, I've never played a game with them so not sure how necessary they are.

Personally I'm more of a fan of non-thaumatic mods. Magic and potions in Minecraft can get a little bit too much imho. Probably why one of my favourite mods is Terra Firma Craft as it actually in it's base form removes all redstone and magic based stuff.

I see you have Thaumcraft as a want and Forbidden Magic as a leftover; if you are considering running Thaumcraft it is worth including Forbidden Magic as well, as it creates interactions with other popular magic mods, usually Blood Magic and/or Botania, and expands base Thaumcraft so the Nether and Taint are actually useful to players progressing through the mod. You'd also want to include Baubles as well with Thaumcraft or Artifacts, as both mods make use of the extra armor slots it provides.

For exploration and unique items, I'd recommend bumping up The Twilight Forest on the list, as it is all about questing through different areas and fighting through unique dungeons and bosses for potentally nifty loot. Additionally, the mod offers some decorative blocks exclusive to it, such as disappearing/reappearing blocks in the Ghast Tower and trophies you can stick on your walls from the various bosses.

You might also consider Roguelike Dungeons and dimensional doors for additional dungeon content; the former is quite popular and makes challenging dungeons found in many mod packs, while the latter makes very interesting, and potentially dangerous, dungeons and allows the creation of pocket dimensions.

Extra Utilities is very popular for cheap early game power, 'natural' mob grinders, watering cans, and its quarry replacement. Though popular with a lot of people, there isn't any real need to run the mod if you have replacements for these things elsewhere and you want to keep the pack lean.
EDIT: Or if you want the builder's wand, which I completely forgot about and is a fantastic tool that makes building structures a LOT faster/easier.

I find Fossils and Archeology superior to Jurassicraft, as both do similar things by adding dinosaurs, but Fossils also adds a unique boss and Nether worldgen structures.

EnderStorage is a great mod that offers affordable long-distance item and fluid transportation, but it ultimately falls behind Ender IO and Thermal Expansion offerings for this purpose as the game progresses, and it is only really useful in combination with certain mods like Automagey.

Draconic Evolution is probably *the* current end-game mod, as it requires a lot of grinding, but the items and equipment it provides are extraordinarily powerful.

Minefactory Reloaded offers some of the best automation tools around and is generally popular because of that, especially in combination with Tinker's Construct due to the mod's Pink Slime, but most of what it does Ender IO does better; only really worth including if you want the pink slime or auto-enchanters.

    EDIT:

Thaumic Tinkerer is a really odd mod, but one worth considering if you include Thaumcraft. It allows the creation of extremely high capacity wands, the general best option for equipment enchanting, and a good set of armor with creative flight. Just be careful with elemental fires from the mod, as they can do a LOT of damage.

Chisel is also probably worth moving bumping up on the list, especially if you have someone that likes decorating. It allows many mundane blocks to be turned into several spiffy variants and can add a lot of variety to pretty much any building.

Yeah, it's more of just figuring out what my server can run first. I don't want to put in like 100 mods just to find out the server can't handle more than 50 or something like that. Will be interesting to see how far I can push my luck. :o Especially things that are potentially resource-hungry. I figure anything like Twilight Forest that adds in a completely new dimension will be pretty grindy on resources.

I'm struggling to find my mod balance too. I need some bodies to stress test it too once I've set up the base mods I want to do. I'm looking to establish TFC as my main "world mod" (it'll be running either on a spare laptop or on my pc whilst I'm playing (far from ideal I know but thats how the cookie crumbles) so it could be highly restrictive in my situation (though the server is simply to provide an option for me, paul and dan to hook up and play.

In the event that the server I'm building on my machine is a no fly zone, how much are you paying for server space atm?

As far as I know, both TF and DD are indeed quite intensive.
