Unhappy Final Fantasy XI servers closed on PS2 & XBox 360/PS2 obit

Somewhat getting lost in all the brouhaha over Final Fantasy XV, at 10AM EDT today (March 31st) Square Enix closed it's servers for Final Fantasy XI on both the Playstation 2 and the XBox 360. Final Fantasy XI was released on May 16, 2002 on both systems and Windows PCs. But fret not, console gamers, you can transfer your PlayOnline IDs to Square Enix Accounts then download the game on your PC for free. Here is the link with information on how to do so: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/envi/win/winshift.html
This in turn also signifies the end of the Playstation 2 era, which began in 2000. The Sony system is the highest selling console of all time, with over 155 million units sold. A slew of well-loved Square Enix games were released on the system, including Dragon Quest VIII, mainline Final Fantasy titles from X and XII, as well as spin-off Final Fantasy X-2 and the afformentioned Final Fantasy XI, Square Enix's first MMORPG.

Despite having to say goodbye to the console versions of this game, this is still an exciting time to be a Final Fantasy fan. There's still the PC version to play, and Final Fantasy XIV is going strong. With the upcoming releases of Final Fantasy XV and the remake of Final Fantasy VII, things are still looking up for fans of the series.

When I get a more powerful PC i may look into this. Unless ive missed my chance because i refused to get an internet connection at the time....I also I dont care for them charging subscription costs. This was one PS2 FF they really screwed me on when they couldve just made it offline like the rest of them.

Keep in mind they are also going to be releasing a smartphone port of it - I'm not sure if it uses the same servers as PC though, but I don't see why not. For me FFXI was so amazing for a lot of years, especially during the first 3-5 years of its life. It's a little sad that it's nearing the end of its life, but I moved on a long time ago. I'm kind of surprised the PS2 version has been supported for so long, I mean it pretty much runs well on a toaster of a PC so I'm not sure why people never migrated over.

Except for Square it has been their most profitable Final Fantasy, so I don't think they share the same sentiment.

If it's something you don't need for this game, it's a powerful PC.

As long as it doesn't have an intel integrated graphics, anyway.

I'm genuinely curious how many dedicated purists out there were still playing on their PS2s.

I know Seekers of Adoulin actually got a PS2 release in Japan. I believe it was the very last PS2 game released.
    I like Kung-Fu.

What they should do is release it for future consoles like PS4 and the Xbone...... and allow Offline access like Diablo 3 and allow you to play it with the option of online use.

I only ever played FFXI on PS2. I think I'd play it on PC if I were to go back today, though.

Game is completely different from Diablo 3 and would require a complete redesign to work in offline mode.
