Green Goblin is the easy pick, but he is pretty good. I enjoy Hobgoblin and Kingpin as well.

We're just going to have to disagree. Carnage, to me, creates the other half of the Joker for Spider-Man villain. Green Goblin has the back story and involves the death of loved ones. He's also the clever thinker, while Carnage is the remorseless, homicidal force that can't be reasoned with.

Carnage is one of, if not the only, villain that really has Spidey contemplating purposely killing a villain because he believes they're truly irredeemable.

I'm not saying the writing has always been great for Carnage, like how they always bring him back from the dead in ridiculous ways, but the writing for pretty much every Spidey villain has been hit and miss.

Spidey is like the nice guy at work who welcomes all the new heros and villains into the Marvel universe, and the old regulars habitually come by his cubicle to hang out.

.......ahem.

When you have a revolving door of guests characters, they're not always going to get the best story, but the Symbiotes have their place and I find Carnage to be a very interesting force in Spider-Man lore.

Now, I haven't consistently read Spider-Man since the mid-late 90's, and maybe things have changed. In my time (old man) Carnage's joyful brutality really played well of of Spider-Man's efforts to truly do good.
