Default A Brief Stephen King Interlude

If I can tempt you away from new stuff for a moment, who likes Stephen King?

I think he's great but only when he's great that is. When it comes to his brand of horrific stuff somehow I'm fine with it. He just has that blunt and honest sense of humour that makes me forgive him. I love how he throws a supernatural and grotesque image out of left field.

    I love the following books:

    The Tommyknockers
    Duma Key

I love the following short stories:

    The Jump (from Skeleton Crew)
Dolan's Cadilliac (from Nightmares and Dreamscapes)
Home Delivery (from Nightmares and Dreamscapes)

    I'm meh about these books:

Salem's Lot (he tried and failed to be as good as Bram Stoker)
Pet Sematary (not as good as it sounds. He basically wrote a tragic porno story with a smattering of supernatural)

And....I think The First Book of The Dark Tower makes for good kindling. I never read further.

His biography On Writing is basically about how he was a popular kid turned alchoholic who didn't sympathise with his first protagonist Carrie.

......I sympathise with Carrie, like.....A LOT

Anyway.....if you wanna discuss him, he's here for a bit.....

Ah yes, Stephen King. His books got me through pretty much every book report and response essay I had to write throughout middle and high school where the book choice was optional.

It's funny, but my two favorite works of his are his most un-horror stories that are completely uncharacteristic of him; The Green Mile and Dolores Claiborne. But I really love Misery, Carrie, The Shining, It, The Stand, and the first three books of the Dark Tower series as well.
    I like Kung-Fu.

I've only very recently actually been reading his stuff. It's different. I read The Shining a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I also loved his writing/memoir book On Writing. He's an interesting dude.

A very talented writer and not just in the horror genre. There was a book of short stories by him called Four Past Midnight which were excellent.

Two of the short stories went on to become amazing films. The Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me.

I haven't read his Dark Tower series either but I'm really excited because Idris Elba will be in the movie along with McConaughey. I've heard good things about those books though.

I like Stephen King quite a lot. I grew up on his short stories and I need to partially credit my obsession with horror to him. I was particularly creeped out by The Raft, but his novellas are very, very good---Apt Pupil, The Body, Shawshank Redemption... he's pretty amazing.
