The generation that introduced Klefki, some of the worst pokemon designs I've seen.

    Gen III for me.

Gen V experimented a lot, and had a lot of success. But just as many, if not more failures. The new way Exp worked was TERRIBLE. But the plot was great. The new difficulties were great, but the implementation was terrible. Reusable TMs were great. The redundant Pokémon designs were terrible (does anyone even remember Patrat or Pidove?). Etcetera. But it gets points for its strengths, and for trying.

Gen III... It just got things wrong. From the pacing, to the region layout, to the new designs. A lot of it just turned me off, and it's why it was the only generation that I didn't finish until the remakes.

Basically, lower leveled Pokemon received more exp than the stronger ones.

Honestly, replaying Black now and I think it works brilliantly

    Exp was level scaled.

So, if a level 5 beat a level 50, it got a crap ton of Exp.

If a level 50 beat a level 5, it got next to nothing.

Sounds decent, until you realize just how painful it made grinding. Basically, as soon as you got over the level of the Pokémon you were grinding on, you got less, and less, and less Exp.

It made getting to 100 a pain, and threw off the overall Experience curve of the game, IMO.

I thought it was weird too until I started this playthrough which made me realize this is all to streamline the main game. I'm taking a different approach this time, refusing to grind along the way, and my Pokemon are actually just as strong as they need to be. It may have made stuff worse for the post-game, but it's a Godsend for casual fans who just want to advance the story.

It would be interesting to see if you can bork the XP system like you could in Suikoden (which uses the same system) cause it was possible to jump your characters from lv. 5 to 100 in one or two battles by overflow.
